Older adults need to take precautions in order to stay warm and well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are some tips to keep in mind:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep warm inside the house and in buildings. Throw on a sweater while in the house and keep your home to <\/span><b>at least<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 68-70 degrees. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Place rolled up towels in front of doors to keep out drafts from coming inside your home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to make sure to eat enough food to keep you from losing weight, since body fat helps to warm the body. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>When outside: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On very cold days, try to stay inside as much as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check the weather before leaving the house.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wear hats and scarves to conserve body heat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dress warmly: Older adults lose body heat faster compared to when they were younger. It is important to dress appropriately and have adequate clothing to provide warmth. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When a person gets too cold and the body temperature becomes low, a person is at risk for hypothermia and other health problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Early Signs of Hypothermia:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slurred speech<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cold hands and feet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Puffy face<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pale skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being confused<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Later signs of Hypothermia:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moving slowly, trouble walking <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Slow heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shallow breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Losing consciousness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Institute on Aging.
