Topic selection can be one of the most challenging aspects of public speaking. Following these guidelines and tips for topic selection should help.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Guidelines for Topic Selection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Consider the following guidelines when selection a topic.<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0Importance to Speaker: The speaker should care about the topic.\u00a0 It will be difficult to make the speech interesting for the audience if the speaker does not find the topic important.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0Interesting to the audience: Make sure your topic gains and holds the attention of the audience.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0Worthy of listeners\u2019 time: Avoid topics that are frivolous and move toward topics that listeners regard as worth their time.<\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0Appropriateness of scope: The topic should be manageable within the time limits.<\/p>\n<p>E.\u00a0Appropriateness for oral delivery: The topic should be easily developed into a speech.\u00a0 Topics that depend on elaborate formulas or arguments are usually not appropriate for oral delivery.<\/p>\n<p>F.\u00a0Appropriateness to rhetorical situation: Make sure the topic you have selected fits the rhetorical situation. A humorous topic is not appropriate if the situation calls for a serious, solemn topic.<\/p>\n<p>G.\u00a0Clarity: The topic should be easy to understand and clear for the audience.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2. Select a topic that is both timely and timeless.\u00a0 There are certain issues that will always be part of human dialogue. \u00a0These issues, paired with contemporary events and issues, always make for timeless speeches.\u00a0 Something you read in a newspaper article would likely be timely but wouldn\u2019t be timeless.\u00a0 When reading a newspaper article or watching news broadcast, you should ask \u201cwhat is the larger issue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips for Topic Selection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Draw from your own experience. What are some unusual experiences you have had? What special knowledge or expertise do you have? What are some strong opinions and beliefs you hold?<\/p>\n<p>2. Be familiar with news and current events. Keep up to date with controversial, grassroots, and ethical issues.\u00a0 Check out these news sources:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/\">MSNBC<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/\">\u00a0FOX<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/\">CNN<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/\">NPR<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/\">New York Times<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/proxy.abilenetx.com:2048\/login?url=http:\/\/www.2facts.com\/Direct2.asp?ItemID=WE57&amp;ID=95110\">Issues and Controversies database<\/a>\u00a0(use number on student ID to gain access)<\/p>\n<p>3. Brainstorm in order to generate ideas. The following are different ways of generating ideas<\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0Word association: This is where the speaker generates a list of words or ideas associated with possible topics.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0Topic mapping: Start with general or broad topic then begin to write down words or items associated with the topic.\u00a0 Each level should be narrower than the previous level.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0Internet searches:\u00a0Web pages such as the ones listed above are helpful when trying to generate speech ideas.\u00a0 Search engines such as Google and Bing may also be useful for broad general ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sources:<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Hair, D, Stewart, R, &amp; Rubenstein, H.
