New Business
New Staff – Allen Ward, Athletic Director
Allen asked each of the senators to introduce themselves and give a description of what they do to help him understand the different roles on campus. He is excited to be at ACU, and believes his purpose here is to make a difference for ACU as an institution and to impact others for Christ. He wants to help build traditions, impact students lives, and increase visibility for ACU. His dream is for all of his athletes to leave ACU with a championship ring and a diploma. Glorifying God in everything they do is the main objective. There is a lot of work to do and they need the staff senate’s help to encourage all staff members to come out and be part of the games. It’s fun and it is a great way to encourage not only students but each other. He wants us to know that he is here for us. Making a difference takes all of us. We have to partner together.
Committee Updates-
Nominations and Elections – Grant Abston reported that after making so many changes last year, there has not been much work to do yet this year. He volunteered his committee to assist other committees where needed.
Communications – Jill Fortson reported that the Communications Committee met. We will have one Town Hall meeting per semester. We are looking at either October 25 or 31. The preferred time would be around 11:00 a.m. The plan is to meet in the new tennis facility. They have a large meeting space that will work well. The building still needs to be reserved and the date set. They also discussed a new name for the Town Halls. After discussing with both the subcommittee and the executive committee, it was decided to go with Staff Senate Spotlight. During the first Spotlight meeting, we will focus on giving feedback from the survey as well as highlighting a department on campus.
Benefits and Advocacy – Maris Beard reported that while this committee has not met in person, they have a plan in place to attend the quarterly benefits meeting coming up and will meet as a committee after that to discuss what they learned and compare that to the information gleaned from the survey to make recommendations to the senate as well as upper leadership.
Service – MC Jennings reported that their committee came up with several ideas for service projects that not only the senate but all staff could participate in. One was to work the DRI pumpkin patch. Julie Goodenough’s basketball players usually help with this. DRI mainly needs help unloading the trucks. October 2 and 16 at 5pm is when volunteers need to arrive to help unload the trucks. Jill Fortson agreed to mention this in the HR newsletter to invite staff to come volunteer and wear their purple. Another idea was to work the concession stand at Christmas Lane. Berlin Fang mentioned that they would be very grateful for any help we could offer. Both of these opportunities would be a wonderful way to give back to the community as well as giving staff a chance to work together outside of ACU and to get to know each other better. MC Jennings also mentioned an idea about creating a Google form for staff in need to fill out to let us know of places where we could help. Fires, illness, death, etc. We can be in prayer as well as reach out in tangible ways.
Development and Recognition – Shannon Kaemarek reported that her committee is actively involved in compiling the survey results. We had 198 responses. While there are many areas that show encouraging numbers, there are also area that show dissatisfaction. There are some great details in the short-answer questions. Marisa is going to get her office to help organize the data for us to help us find key themes. This is will be an involved process that will take time, but we are in a good position to advise leadership and discuss actions that we can advocate for as a senate.

Meeting with Senior Leadership Team – The executive committee will meet with the Senior Leadership Team on September 25. The time is yet to be determined. There should be about six of the eleven SLT members in attendance.
Meeting with Board of Trustees – D’Angelo had the chance to speak to the Board of Trustees. He only had a few minutes, but he was able to communicate some of the highlights from the survery’s preliminary results. He also addressed the climate of insecurity felt by many after the job cuts that took place last year. He communicated the need to build relationships with the Board and ACU leadership to promote healthy dialog.
Meeting with Dr. Schubert – D’Angelo also briefly met with Dr. Schubert. He shared the high and low numbers from the survey and discussed options for bringing questions before the SLT.

Meeting adjourned at 11:50 a.m.

Meeting Minutes 9-3-2018 D’angelo Sands, Chair Grant Abston Curtis King Marissa Beard Kody Goode Julie Goodenough Karen Witemeyer David Moses Shannon Kaczmarek Berlin Fang Jill Fortson MC Jennings Garrett Sublette Mary Beth Cuevas Call to Order 9:05am Prayer Approval of minutes Julie Goodenough motioned to approve minutes, Mary Beth Cuevas seconded.
