There are a huge number of external summer research opportunities for students in the STEM disciplines. While this is not close to an exhaustive list, here are the ones that OUR knows about.

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has postings of summer opportunities on their website listed by state. Follow this link to see some of the opportunities.

UT Southwestern Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences has two summer research programs. Both programs have application deadlines of Feb. 9, 2014.

  • Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. The goal of SURF is to give students an intensive, 10-week research experience in a world class research environment. Students immerse themselves in the laboratory and work on individual research projects with UT SouthwesternGraduate School faculty. Most areas of modern biomedical engineering, cancer biology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, and pharmacology are represented.   The SURF website and on-line application can be found at www.utsouthwestern.edu/SURF.
  • Quantitative and Physical Science Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (QP-SURF) Program. This program, initially funded by a NIGMS training grant and now funded internally, will accept 10 students who are earning their undergraduate degrees in the field of biomedical engineering, mathematics, computer science, physics, or chemistry. The goal of QP-SURF is to give students an intensive, research experience and demonstrate to students in the physical and quantitative sciences how their knowledge and skill sets are applied in a biomedical research setting. QP-SURF students would carry out their 10-week research project in a biomedical engineering, biophysics, computational biology, or quantitative/analytical chemistry laboratory. QP-SURF students also participate in seminars, optional classes in Immunology and Genetics, social events, and an end-of-program poster session. The program website and on-line application for QP-SURF can be found at www.utsouthwestern.edu/QP-SURF.

The Department of Energy has a variety of summer research opportunities in disciplines including Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Science and Information Technology, Mathematics, Statistics, and Safety and Health, among others. Learn more at DOE Scholars HomePage.

Department of Energy Announces Applications Open for 2014 Summer Term Internship/Fellowships

The Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications to its 2014 Summer Term internship/fellowship opportunities at Department of Energy (DOE) Laboratories. These competitive, paid internships, are for 10 weeks during the Summer Term (May to August time frame), and include support for travel and housing. The three programs accepting applications are: Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI), Community College Internships (CCI), and Visiting Faculty Program (VFP). Applications for these three programs must be completed and submitted online by5:00 PM ET on January 10, 2014 (including all required application materials and recommendations).
