In years past there was the mentality that you had to wear your very best clothes to church for God \u2013 that\u2019s how you show respect for God.<\/p>\n
I think it was at Springfield Church of Christ (Fairfax, VA) that someone said, \u201cYou have to wear a suit to serve on the Lord\u2019s Table.\u201d\u00a0 And my husband said, \u201cI\u2019ve seen farmers stand up in their bib overalls and serve communion.\u201d\u00a0 He had a pair of bib overalls and he threatened to wear them.\u00a0 I was mortified \u2013 my own pride I guess.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cHoney, you really can\u2019t do that.\u201d\u00a0 And oh, he really had me going.\u00a0 He kept saying, \u201cI think I\u2019ll just do that.\u00a0 I\u2019ll wear my overalls to serve on the table,\u201d to make his point that God doesn\u2019t care about how you\u2019re dressed, He cares about your inner heart.<\/p>\n
In later years men still wore suits to serve communion. \u00a0Then we moved to Honolulu.\u00a0 To show up at Pearl Harbor Church of Christ and have them walk up in Bermuda shorts and flip-flops to serve communion\u2026 it just blew us away.\u00a0 Culture shock!\u00a0 \u00a0But people over here, they\u2019re not wearing suits and ties on Sunday morning to serve communion.\u00a0 The culture over here is: \u201cWe\u2019re going to beach afterward.\u00a0 It\u2019s a hot summer and we don\u2019t have an air-conditioned building, so we\u2019re going to wear the coolest clothing we have.\u00a0 We\u2019re decently covered, and it\u2019s okay with God.\u00a0 He\u2019s not paying attention to what we\u2019re wearing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
