I found this booklet on AIGA’s website while looking for something else. I think it is an interesting and useful guide, although it has been put together by the IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America). The author takes you through the various challenges and strategies when looking for jobs.

I definitely encourage you to download the manual, and filter the content that is pertinent to your situation.

For Japan

Hi!

As many of you may know already that my home country, Japan, is in a huge crisis now. It is said that more than 20,000 people died or are missing from the earthquakes and tsunamis. Also, I see on News that many people struggling with lack of food, water, or diapers for babies.

So, as a graphic designer, I looked for things I can do, and found this website. It’s called “Cause for Design.” You can submit your wall paper or t-shirt designs, and they will be sold for $1. All the money raised there will be sent to Red Cross to support Japan.

The website is just started and not so active yet, so it would be great if you guys can submit some designs or share the web site with your friends. I think this is a good place for us to show our design skills off to the world, too ;)

Also, there will be a donation box in the Campus Center after chapel to about 2pm everyday next week, so please come by and put some change in it.

Thank you!

Making an e-Portfolio

Making an e-Portfolio is easier than you think. In a few words, this is what you need to do:

Design everything in InDesign.
1. Start a new document, letter size, landscape orientation.
2. Create master pages for style, grid, type, and “navigation-bar.”
3. Import images. Make sure you’ve sized them correctly, no need for oversized images nor resolution.
4. Export document as PDF. Uncheck “spreads.” Try a few options under “compression” from PDF export menu. If you keep the Image Quality to its maximum, it will result in larger file, so try a medium or low image quality, but do NOT compromise quality.

Add interaction (hotspots) in Acrobat:
1. Open PDF document. Display thumbnails.
2. Go to Tools>Advanced Editing>Link Tool. Click and drag over area you wish to make a “hotspot.” Select “Invisible Rectangle” for Link Type, and “Go to a page view” for Link Action.

3. Link to the page by clicking (highlighting it) on thumbnail column and then “Set Link.” Repeat same steps for each hotspot on every page.
4. Save file and test it, make sure the links are working as you planned.
