Exhibitions & Publications

Ultimately, the exhibition of an architect’s work are the buildings themselves. Given that buildings are usually difficult to relocate and most often will not fit into a gallery, representations through photographs, drawings and models must suffice. Inclusion in architectural exhibitions and publications are important benchmarks that signify approval by peers and colleagues within the profession.

There are several criteria in the Tenure & Promotion Guidelines, including those added by the Department of Art & Design, related to exhibitions and publications. I’ve identified the following criteria that relate directly to exhibitions and publications I’ve contributed to:

  • Exhibitions or performances
  • Publications
  • Peer review, artistic promotion and exposure.
    • invitation group shows
    • competitive exhibitions

EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHT – UTSOA CENTENNIAL EXHIBIT

mebane centennial

In the fall of 2010, the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin celebrated its 100th anniversary. The School has long been a premiere institution for the education of architects, consistently ranking in the top 10 graduate architecture programs across the nation. This is clearly evident in the body of work and research produced by the students, faculty and alumni of the University. The centennial celebration was held the weekend of November 5-6, 2010 and included a reception, dinner, open house, symposium, several presentations (including a keynote speech from alumnus Craig Dykers, principal of Snøhetta, an internationally-recognized, award-winning architecture firm based in Oslo, Norway) and an exhibit of selected Alumni work. My work on the Fifth & Main Mixed-Use Development was chosen by Stephen Sharpe, editor of Texas Architect, to be included in the exhibit, which was shown in Mebane Gallery – the School’s primary exhibit space – through the month of November 2010 and in an online exhibit that can be viewed here. It was incredibly humbling to have my work included alongside other outstanding work from across the globe including: DFW International Airport Terminal D, Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, Oklahoma City National Memorial, Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, ASU Polytechnic Academic Campus and the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing.
