Chem 101 – Consumer Chemistry – Fall 2012

Course Description: A study of chemistry’s influence on consumers, the environment, and society with emphasis on grasping the beauty and order of the Creator’s handiwork and on equipping citizens for more informed decisions.

Target Audience: This course is designed as a general education course for non-science majors.

Chem 111 – Introduction to General Chemistry Lab – Fall 2010

Course Description: Introduction to measurement and observation. Activities coordinate with topics discussed in CHEM 113. Emphasis given to quantitative measurements and interpretation of data.

Target Audience: This course is for students with majors in the School of Nursing and the departments of Agricultural and Environmental Science and Kinesiology and Nutrition.

Chem 113 – Introduction to General Chemistry – Fall 2010, Summer 2013, Fall 2013

Course Description: This course covers fundamental concepts of atomic structure; chemical reactions of acids, bases, and salts; behavior of solids, liquids, and solutions.

Target Audience: This course is for students with majors in the School of Nursing and the departments of Agricultural and Environmental Science and Kinesiology and Nutrition.

Chem 114 – Organic and Biological Chemistry – Spring 2010, Spring 2011, Summer 2013

Course Description: During this course, we discuss and implement the fundamental concepts of organic and biological chemistry including the subjects of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid derivatives, amines, carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, and proteins as a foundation for the further study of chemistry.

Target Audience: This course is for students with majors in the School of Nursing and the departments of Agricultural and Environmental Science and Kinesiology and Nutrition.

Chem 131 – General Chemistry I Lab – Fall 2012

Course Description: Standard laboratory equipment is used to collect and interpret data.  Experiments include determination of molecular formula, solution concentration and chemical reactivity.

Target Audience: This course is a co-requisite for Chem 133 General Chemistry I. It is for chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, and other pre-health professional students.

Chem 132 – General Chemistry II Lab – Spring 2011, Spring 2012

Course Description: Continues to explore practical application of chemistry. Spectrophotometers and pH meters are used to study chemical equilibrium. Qualitative analysis is also introduced.

Target Audience: This course is  a co-requisite for Chem 134 General Chemistry II. It is for chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, and other pre-health professional students.

Chem 203 – General Science for Elementary Teachers – Fall 2011, Spring 2012, Spring 2014

Course Description: Presents the fundamental principles of chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy, meteorology, and biology on a practical basis for elementary teachers. The course includes experiments and demonstrations that are pertinent to the teaching of science at the elementary level.

Target Audience: This course is for pre-service elementary and middle school teachers.

Chem 413 – Physical Chemistry for Life Sciences – Fall 2009, Fall 2013

Course Description:  The major topics covered in this course include thermodynamics, bioenergetics and chemical equilibria, reaction rates and the effects of enzymes and quantum mechanics and spectroscopy.

 Target Audience Physical Chemistry for Life Sciences is for upper level biochemistry majors.

Chem 453/ Biol 472/ Chem 401 Biochemistry I – Fall 2009, Fall 2010, Fall 2011, Fall 2012, Spring 2013, Fall 2013

Course description: Discusses the chemistry, structural aspects, and properties of amino acids, peptides, proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and their application in elementary metabolism.

Target audience:  This course is designed to prepare upper level biochemistry, biology, and chemistry majors for graduate school, professional school in human or veterinary medicine or pharmacy, or the work force in health and biotechnology related fields.

Chem 454 – Biochemistry II – Spring 2010, Spring 2013

Course description: Presents the bioenergetics and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids along with other advanced topics in biochemistry.

Target audience:  This course is designed to prepare upper level biochemistry, biology, and chemistry majors for graduate school, professional school in human or veterinary medicine or pharmacy, or the work force in health and biotechnology related fields.

Chem 463 – Biochemistry Lab I – Spring 2010, Fall 2010, Fall 2011, Fall 2012

Course description: Practical experience and theoretical background in general biochemistry laboratory techniques and techniques for the analysis of protein structure and function.

Target audience:  This course is for upper-level biochemistry majors.

Chem 464 – Biochemistry Lab II – Spring 2010, Spring 2011, Spring 2012, Spring 2013

Course description: Practical experience and theoretical background in general biochemistry laboratory techniques and techniques for the analysis of protein structure and function.

Target audience:  This course is for upper-level biochemistry majors.
