Tour ACU Dallas — virtually

by   |  04.10.19  |  MSLP@ACU Dallas

April 15th is just around the corner! Many of you have made the decision to attend ACU Dallas for graduate studies and we are so excited and thankful for your commitment. Many of you were not able to attend an Open House tour in person. We wanted to give you some idea of the spaces where you would attend classes and meet with faculty and students. Dr. Bender pitched a “virtual tour” video idea to our resident videographer, Rob Robitaille and he gave life to her vision. We hope you enjoy “touring” ACU Dallas!

ACU Dallas – Virtual Open House

by   |  04.04.19  |  MSLP@ACU Dallas

It has been a whirlwind of activity this semester at ACU Dallas!  The faculty has enjoyed reviewing each applicant’s information and getting to know each of you a little better through the interview process.  It was wonderful to meet all who were able to come to a campus Open House and those who attended the Virtual Open House. We look forward to hearing from each of you by April 15th as you decide which graduate program to attend.

As promised, below is the link to the recording from the Virtual Open House.  It is the full recording, which is almost an hour in length and can be viewed using the link below.  There are introductions at the beginning followed by a slide presentation of the program requirements.  Dr. Crumrine provides an overview of the 1st semester clinical rotation that we [lovingly] call LEAPS. At the end Delaney Davis, a current student, answers questions from those in attendance.  Feel free to skip around in the video and find the information in which you are most interested.

Please forgive all my fillers — the video environment is very different than in person!

Below are two helpful documents.  The first is a brochure summarizing the program requirements and the degree plan.  The second is a listing of apartments where current students have lived or are living with as many details as we can find regarding apartment size, location [distance from campus], rent and amenities.

If you have questions or need additional information, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Bender!

Speech Pathology and Beards?

by   |  11.01.18  |  Alumni Spotlights

It’s not often that we associate a speech-language pathologist (SLP) with finding solutions for “the dry, flaky, itchy skin that plagues any man with beard and mustache hair,” but that’s just what Molly (Paulsen) Parker (’07) has done. As a mother of two young boys, Molly began producing natural and organic foods, lotions, and such in her home. One thing led to another and by 2014 she had founded “BRAID {Batch Remedies AID} which specializes in Natural Remedies for Beauty & Wellness” and  Beard and Tackle Provisions for Men to help with their “unruly beards.”

What makes this so special? Well, while Molly was creating these products at home, she was also providing speech-language services for at-risk children across North Texas. Her heart for helping this population developed into her mission. As a result, 10% of the profits from BRAID are donated to Hope Supply Company which provides resources for homeless and at-risk children in North Texas. Ten percent of profits from Beard & Tackle are donated to OurCalling, a discipleship ministry for the homeless in Dallas. Well done, Molly!

We are proud of Molly and her dedication to serving others!

CSD Alum Creates Online Resource for Parkinson’s Disease

by   |  11.01.18  |  Alumni Spotlights

Hannah (Orozco) Grassie, 2008 graduate of the ACU Communication Sciences and Disorders undergraduate program, has been treating patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) since 2012.  An advocate for the Parkinson’s disease community, Hannah is intentionally working to create a better understanding of PD for patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, as well as speech-language pathologists. Her passion for learning more about and for helping individuals with Parkinson’s led her to create The Parkinson’s Report,  “a space for updates, insights, and professional input on Parkinson’s disease.”  She has also worked closely with the Michael J. Fox Foundation during activities designed to provide education about PD.

We are proud of Hannah and the work she is doing in the field of speech-language pathology!
