Studying abroad in Oxford, England, was a life-changing adventure that has opened my eyes to the beauty and wonder of the world. Before this trip, I had only left my home country once, but during my time abroad, I visited numerous destinations, experienced new cultures, and grew in ways I never anticipated.
Nearly every weekend during my time in Oxford, my friends and I traveled to a different country, immersing ourselves as best as we could in the local culture through food, shopping, and unique experiences. Among the highlights was canyoning in England’s Lake District. This activity entailed jumping down waterfalls and climbing through streams in the countryside. It was thrilling and unreal, and looking back on it, it is crazy to imagine we got to do such a thing. Another unforgettable experience was traveling to Rovaniemi, Finland, where we stood in the Arctic Circle and got to see the northern lights from right in front of our accommodation.
Academically, my studies at Oxford also left a profound impact on me. We delved into the theological imagination of C.S. Lewis, gaining a new perspective on religion and the role of creativity within it. We got to see how Lewis intertwined profound spiritual truths with imaginative storytelling in the Chronicles of Narnia, and it inspired me to approach my faith with fresh eyes. This academic exploration not only deepened my understanding of Christ and his Word but also gave me an appreciation for the beauty of words and their power to convey truth.
Of course, studying abroad was not without its challenges. There were moments of discomfort, like sleeping on freezing airport floors during layovers. However, those situations taught me the importance of adaptability and optimism. Even minor inconveniences were transformed into parts of the grand adventure in foreign places. I learned to embrace uncertainty with a smile, discovering that resilience and flexibility can turn any obstacle into an opportunity for growth.
Surprisingly, I also gained a love for poetry. Initially dreading our British Literature class, I eventually came to admire the art of poets who captured ideas in simple, yet profound words through the fascination of my instructor. This newfound passion inspired me to explore poetry as a way that people express emotion and experience, through words that are deeply encoded, an art I hope to explore further.
This transformative journey has also shaped how I view my future. Having witnessed the accessibility of the world and its opportunities, I now hope to explore more countries and share Christ’s love with people from every culture. The independence and confidence I gained abroad assure me that these aspirations are within reach.
My time abroad was an extraordinary chapter of growth, exploration, and discovery. It enriched me academically, spiritually, and personally, leaving me with invaluable memories and lessons. Studying abroad taught me to embrace the unfamiliar with joy and to see the world not just as a series of destinations but as endless possibilities. This experience has inspired me to live adventurously, pursue my passions, and make a meaningful impact wherever I go.
