During the Summer 2019 semester, the Innovation Foundry partnered with Andres Saucedo (‘14), instructor of biology, to teach the physiology of the heart using a virtual reality application called ShareCare.
In his Anatomy & Physiology II lab, Saucedo walked through the structures of a 3d virtual model of a heart that was pumping blood while wearing a virtual reality headset (Oculus Rift S). Saucedo projected his viewpoint onto the projector screen and made the recording of his descriptions available to the students afterward through his Canvas course. After piloting the use of VR during the summer with positive feedback from his students, Saucedo has continued to use this technology each semester and plans to explore the possibility of expanding to include additional body systems.
