Service at ACU

In my first few years at ACU, many of my service activities revolved around two of my passion areas: mentoring students and collaborating with others in support of sustainability. For example, I became a faculty advisor for the ACU Enactus Chapter because I believe in its mission focused on utilizing entrepreneurial skill sets to address societal challenges and I love developing relationships with students. As I have grown and become more accustomed to my role as a teacher and researcher, I have been asked to serve in more capacities, some of which have stretched me beyond my comfort level and/or skill sets. For instance, I was approached by the COBA Associate Dean, Dr. Andy Little, a number of years ago about serving on the university athletics committee as it relates to academics. I believe my initial response was to laugh and say something like “are you sure you want me to be on that committee?” as I am not someone who is very knowledgeable or passionate about sports. However, this particular service commitment, as well as others I have taken on, reminds me that God often asks us to serve in ways for which we feel ill prepared. I believe that God requires us to faithfully and cheerfully serve to the best of our ability even if we do not fully understand the reasoning behind it.
