A Blog You Should Be Following

I wanted to take this Thursday to give a shout out to an amazing blog that I have been following almost since I started my job as a scholarly communications librarian: The Scholarly Kitchen.

You can take time to peruse their site, but it is a blog sponsored by the Society for Scholarly Publishing, and it has about 25 regular authors with different professional experiences in the field of scholarly communications. It is a very credible site and I enjoy it because even if you are a novice to topics of scholarly communication, it is typically pretty easy to read and understand.

“Leaving Behind the Outrage Economy” – how to be more intentional about using social media and why anger is so valuable online

“Building Your Career in Scholarly Communication: Tips, Tricks and Everything You Ever Wanted to Know!” – the title is self-explanatory, and I found it to be very helpful as a librarian in this field!

“Apple’s Vision of the Future (from 1987)” – a look at what the Apple company thought the future would look like back in 1987 – did their predictions come true?

“Why You Should Care About Open Access: An Open Letter to Scholarly and Scientific Authors” – even if you are not on the OA bandwagon, it’s important to be informed as the future of scholarly publishing changes over time. A great opinion article written by Rick Anderson, the Associate Dean for Collections and Scholarly Communications at the University of Utah.
