Dr. Marquardt Presents on Goal Orientation and Ethical Leadership

Dr. Dennis Marquardt (Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Management) presented last week on his research topic: “How Manager Goal Orientation relates to Employee Unethical and Prosocial Behavior.”

Dr. Marquardt’s research was all about learning about manager’s goal orientations and how this affected their employees. There are three types of goal orientation (Vandewalle, 1997):

Learning Goal Orientation: “a desire to develop the self by acquiring new skills, mastering new situations, and improving one’s competence”

Performance-Prove Goal Orientation: “the desire to prove one’s competence and to gain favorable judgments about it”

Performance-Avoid Goal Orientation: “the desire to avoid the disproving of one’s competence and to avoid negative judgments about it”
