What is the Speaking Center?
The ACU Speaking Center is a campus resource that helps clients improve their public speaking, presentations, speeches, and communication skills in a supportive environment.
Who can use the Speaking Center?
The Speaking Center is open to all students, regardless of major or experience level. It is also open to ACU faculty/staff and the Abilene community.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can schedule appointments through the “make an appointment” page on the ACU Speaking Center blog. Or click this link to: Make an Appointment. To cancel or reschedule, please contact speakingcenter@acu.edu.
Can I walk in without an appointment?
Scheduling ahead is usually recommended during busy times, but we absolutely accept walk-ins when possible!
Where are we located?
The Speaking Center is located on the 2nd floor of the ACU Brown Library near the AT&T Learning Studio.
What should I bring to my session?
Bring any assignment instructions, outlines, drafts, note cards, slides, or visual aids related to your presentation for the best assistance!
Will someone edit or write my speech for me?
No. The goal is to help you develop your own ideas and speaking skills while offering constructive feedback and guidance.
Do I have to memorize my speech before coming in?
No. You can come in at any stage of the process: brainstorming, outlining, drafting, or final rehearsal.
Can the Speaking Center help with online presentations or Zoom speeches?
Yes, we offer support for virtual presentations, including camera presence, pacing, and online audience engagement.
How do I make, reschedule, or cancel a Speaking Center appointment?
Appointments can be made, rescheduled, or canceled through our online scheduling system. If you need assistance, contact the Speaking Center directly.
How are online appointments held?
In-Person Appointments – Meet live with a consultant face to face at the ACU Speaking Center.
Digital Appointments – Meet live with a consultant through a video conferencing platform at your scheduled appointment time. This option is for online students, students with disabilities, summer students, or other exceptional circumstances.
Can I schedule a group appointment?
Yes! Group appointments are available for presentations involving multiple speakers. Contact the Speaking Center for scheduling details.
How will my professor know I attended?
After your appointment, your Speaking Center consultant will submit a report to your instructor giving them a record of your attendance.
Do I need to have my speech finished before coming?
No. Consultants can help at any stage of the speech process, from brainstorming and organization to delivery practice and final revisions.
How do I get hired?
To become a consultant, you can submit your inquiry or application to the Director Dr. Kholo Theledi (kmt11c@acu.edu) or speakingcenter@acu.edu. Candidates who have passed COMM 120/COMM 211 at ACU will be prioritized.
