Images of Aging Photographers Tell the Stories behind their Photos – Samantha McIntyre

Now it is time for our Images of Aging contest winners to tell “the rest of the story” about their photograph! Over the last few days our student photographers gave their extended caption for the photos they submitted to our contest!

Here is the extended caption from Samantha McIntyre’s photo, Living That Beach Life

“After an early morning of smoothie bowls and walking around Encinitas, California, Beverly and Bob McIntyre, aka Mimi and Papa, took the grandchildren out for a swim at the beach to enjoy a little sun. This is one of the rare moments of Papa sitting down because he’s always in the water and catching the every wave, despite his struggle with diabetes. Mimi, on the other hand, loves relaxing and learning about the newest design trends that she can use in her side job as an interior designer. When she’s not hanging out with her family or designing, she is traveling the world as a missionary or working at her local church as a women’s pastor. They have been married for 54 years and still manage to make each other smile everyday.”

Samantha’s photo earned Honorable Mention in the Color category.  Continued congratulations, Samantha!

“When I was growing up, my great grandfather would drive up in his tan Chevrolet after school to pick my sister and I up and take us to have cookies and milk with our great grandmother until we were able to go home when our father got off work. Our after school activities would consist of roaming through the garden, playing the harmonica, reading fairy tales, and of course.. sugar cookies and milk with our homework. He constantly gave his time and effort into demonstrating love to us girls. My grandpa Walker is a man who is full of laughter and joy for life. Serving over 40+ years in the Navy as an E6 Sailor, he has dedicated his life to service, my grandmother, family and the Lord. He never failed to smile and demonstrate such joy. After losing my grandmother, he still has continued to prioritize joy over his life and has given that gift to me. Through any thing that life brings you, God never fails to give you a reason to smile and to never let it fade, so just smile.”

Caitlin’s photo earned 1st place in the Black and White category.  Continued congratulations, Caitlin!

“My grandmother, Wynell, pictured at age 79 now 80, attends a painting class each week with four or five other individuals, where the first 20 minutes are spent sharing snacks and stories of the last week. She is painting an African design from a textile that she brought purchased when she lived in Guinea, where she lived off and on for a few years until April 2016, teaching speech pathology to a missionary family.  What I love about this photo are the many textures: Patterns, canvas, hair, paint, color, and skin combining together to create a mosaic of the lives lived together, friends nearby working in community.”

Krista’s photo earned 1st place in the Color category.  Continued congratulations, Krista!

“This is my granddad, Lee. I am entering this photo into the mobile category under the title “My ‘Spec-tacular’ Granddad.” My granddad is 77 years-old, and the absolute kindest person I know. He is a retired school bus driver, and avid YMCA attendee. He and my Nana have been married for over 40 years, and have raised 8 children and many of their grandchildren. After 3 bouts of cancers of differing kinds, 2 knee replacement and 1 hip replacement surgeries, I am completely convinced that he is a superhero. His love for his family and his love for God emanate from him in a tangible way. His positivity and laughter are contagious. He is the most beloved granddad in the world!”

0 Commentsby   |  08.29.16  |  Announcements

Dr. Pruett’s students in GERO 352/552 course called “Adult Development and Aging” will submit photos for the 2016-2017 Images of Aging Photo contest as part of their coursework. The purpose of the Images of Aging photo contest is to encourage interaction between students and older adults. Students may photograph a family member who is close to them, but some photos may also reflect mentors, acquaintances, professors, or an interaction viewed by the student. All photos will be accompanied by a Photo Release.

This assignment has the following completion steps:

1) Identify a person(s) over the age of 60 years who will be the subject of your photo. It is permissible that an older family member be selected.

2.) Go to this blog: blogs.acu.edu/imagesofaging. At the blog, read the contest rules, download the release forms, and view previous contest photos.

3.) Take your pictures and choose the best one to submit in either the Traditional Camera or Mobile category.

4.) Email the jpeg file of your picture (or a scanned file) to imagesofaging@acu.edu. Place your name and the title of your photo in the Subject Line of the email.

5.) Be sure to email the signed release form with your photo submission.  Assignments will not receive credit if the release form does not accompany the photo submission

6.) In your email listing participant(s) full names, location of the photo, date of the photo, your complete contact information, including your Banner number.

7.) Include the story of your photo as an comprehensive caption (i.e. Why does your photo represent an inter-generational interaction, inter-generational relationships, including personal relationships, hobbies and travels, holidays, work/retirement, and/or bereavement.)

This is a productive opportunity to join six years of student photographers from across the country. Looking forward to seeing  your photos!

The entries in each Category will be judged separately.  Proof of submission is not proof of receipt.
Pruett Gerontology Center and Abilene Christian University reserve the right to display winning and non-winning photos and use all photos submitted in any way deemed appropriate to sponsors at no cost and without any additional permission from entrant.  Entrants retain all other rights to their own photographs.
