Post-colloquium paper

Assignment

Write a paper with reflections on Photography & Society. You will research Salgado’s exhibit “Migrations: Humanity in Transition.” Visit three galleries. Explain your understanding and response about the subject and comment his work. Incorporate thoughts with some of the following statements and/or questions.

• The place of the photographer in relation to society and the natural world.

• Is photography art, is it science (technology), does it owe something to both?

• Are the meanings and forms of photographic images culturally specific?

• Do cultural representations depend on the shaping effect of the technology and its control?

• In your opinion, is Salgado simply interested in the aesthetic value of his works? (read the text by Levi-Strauss available on the Syllabus)
