Description

This colloquium is not only intended to be an interactive workshop, but also to explore the narrative power of photography and its role in society. An examination of photographs and their impact on cultural awareness.  The class includes some technical instruction and development of prints. No photography experience is necessary.

Objectives

We will prepare and present a photography exhibit exploiting photographic camera’s potential for cultural expression. Visual exploration of given assignment and reflections on photography as a narrative tool. Special emphasis will be given on the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastiao Salgado, and a few others.

At the conclusion of the colloquium the students will:
1) Understand photography as a medium of mass communication, value critical thinking, and open-mindness (Honors Outcome 3f,g)
2) Know the role of innovation and creativity in a civilization (Honors Outcome 3a)
3) Demonstrate the ability to think across boundaries of disciplines, methodologies, bodies of information, and genres of communication (Honors Outcome 3e)
4) Develop and process Cyanotype prints, mount prints and prepare them for exhibition

Activities

1) Reading of handouts
2) Lectures, demonstrations and critiques
3) Photographic field assignments
4) Use of photographic cameras (any format, including cellphones)
5) Making of Cyanotype prints
6) Blog activity*

*Online participation on class-blog discussions and comments.
Note: you are expected to write at least 1 comment, and encouraged to add 1 post of your own thinking (not just a link to another website or blog, leave some comments, your opinion, what you think about the work linked, etc). Attention: any post/comment created after April 22 won’t count for your blog activity.

Attendance / Tardy Policy

1. Attendance is expected at all class sessions.
2. Absences will not be tolerated, thus resulting in automatic failure of the course.
3. Tardiness or leaving class earlier will be addressed on personal basis.

Grading Factors

The final grade will be composed of:

Field photo-assignment: 30%
Cyanotype print: 20%
Post-colloquium paper: 30%
Class/blog Participation: 20%
