Independent Future for Blind/Visually Impaired Children

All parents hope for an independent future for their blind/visually impaired child. To turn that hope into a reality, parents need to understand the scope of skill development that must be addressed, along with the importance of equal expectations for the child’s development, proper training, and opportunity to practice and develop skills. But what if expectations are low, training in blindness skills is scant or even absent, and overprotection prevents the blind (VI) child from learning and practising skills? The idea of an independent future can remain a distant dream. The purpose of this book is to guide parents and teachers in fostering the blind/visually impaired child’s skill development in such critical areas as academics, independent movement and travel, social interaction, daily living, and self-advocacy so that he or she will truly be on the road to an independent future.

A practical, easy-to-use guide, written in plain English, the book warns about common problem areas and provides ideas for getting and keeping the child’s education and development on track. It highlights the interplay between skills and competence, confidence, self-respect, and the respect of others. Of the small number of books and videos available on the subject, most were written by professionals in the field and many begin with the supposition that blindness is at best sad and at worst tragic. Few have the ardent passion for independence that the parent of a blind/visually impaired child brings to the subject. Instead of overwhelming parents and teachers with the difficulty of the undertaking before them, Getting Ready for College Begins in Third Grade will inspire their confidence and enthusiasm for the task at hand.

Multicultural Approach to Education

Michael Vavrus helps readers better understand why issues of diversity and difference are so highly contested in the United States and across the globe. Vavrus incorporates specific education examples throughout the text to examine six contested areas: race and ethnicity; socioeconomic class and culture; multicultural and ethnic studies; language; religion; and sexuality and gender. In each of these areas, the author explores how contrasting worldviews found in social conservatism, liberal multiculturalism, and critical multiculturalism influence our understandings about difference and diversity and the educational policies we develop as a result. Diversity and Education is designed to help educators move beyond the “how can they believe that?” knee-jerk reaction toward a more informed, strategic understanding of belief systems and political affiliations.

Introduction to Garment Construction

The perfect introduction to the core principles of garment construction, How Patterns Work simplifies and explains the relationship between pattern making and the body.

No previous knowledge of patterns or sewing is required. Chapters start from zero assumed knowledge and build slowly in complexity with step by step examples and over 250 clear diagrams. How Patters Work breaks the process of pattern-making into simple principles that can be applied to any pattern change.

After reading this book, you won’t just be able to follow pattern making instructions, you will actually understand how and why pattern making works and be able to adapt the principles for yourself. All of the examples are shown in relation to how the pattern will ultimately be sewn so that the principles become more relevant to real sewn garments.

Guide for Creating a Winning Engineering Project

Engineering Project Management is a practical, step-by-step guide to project management for engineers. The author describes the techniques and strategies for creating a successful engineering project.

The book introduces engineering projects and their management, and then proceeds stage-by-stage through the engineering life-cycle project, from requirements, implementation, to phase-out. The book offers information for understanding the needs of the end-user of a product and other stakeholders associated with a project and is full of techniques based on real, hands-on management of engineering projects.

The book starts by explaining how we perform the actual engineering on projects; the techniques for project management contained in the rest of the book use those engineering methods to create superior management techniques. Every topic – from developing a work-breakdown structure and an effective project plan, to creating credible predictions for schedules and costs, through monitoring the progress of your engineering project – is infused with actual engineering techniques, thereby vastly increasing the effectivity and credibility of those management techniques.

Back to Square One

Engineering Entrepreneurship from Idea to Business Plan is for engineers and scientists interested in both creating new products and starting a business plan to sell them. Technology-based business plan contests with large monetary awards have been cropping up worldwide, which is a clear indication that many wealthy investors are on the lookout for innovative, technology-based businesses. This text shows how to sharpen a new idea and turn it into a useful commercial product, conduct patent research and complete a provisional patent application, and collect the requisite data, prepare a business model and create a business plan with projected cash flow.

On the Cusp of Graduation

This book has been developed with an intellectual framework to focus on the challenges and specific qualities applicable to graduates on the threshold of their careers. Young professionals have to establish their competence in complying with multifaceted sets of ethical, environmental, social, and technological parameters. This competence has a vital impact on the curricula of higher education programs because professional bodies today rely on accredited degrees as the main route for membership.

Consequently, this four-part book makes a suitable resource for a two-semester undergraduate course in professional practice and career development in universities and colleges. With its comprehensive coverage of a large variety of topics, each part of the book can be used as a reference for other related courses where sustainability, systems thinking, professional practice and career development are evidence and increasingly visible.

It’s all in how the Body Moves

Dynamic Human Anatomy, Second Edition, covers concepts not found in traditional anatomy texts and helps students apply those concepts.

Formerly titled Dynatomy, this introductory to upper-level biomechanics text sets itself apart from other texts by connecting biomechanical principles with applications in sports and dance, strength training, work settings, and clinical settings. Dynamic Human Anatomy offers applied dance- and sport- specific information on how the body performs the dynamic movement, providing students with an understanding of the body’s structure and function as it explores the elegance and complexity of the body’s functional movement anatomy.

This text explores the potential of the human body to express itself through movement, making it a highly valuable text for students who have taken, or are taking, introductory anatomy and who need a more detailed exposure to concepts in human movement anatomy.

OT Therapy Approach

A transition is a passage from one life state, stage, or place to another. Occupational therapy practitioners increasingly serve clients at critical times of transition as people experience planned and unplanned transitions throughout their lifespan. This comprehensive text is the first to offer an occupational therapy approach to clients’ transition needs, from the neonatal intensive care unit and school to ageing and end of life. Aligned with the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, this work explores the various transitions people experience and the ways in which occupational therapy can facilitate better intervention outcomes as clients face changes and challenges in their lives.

As health care systems are currently undergoing many changes, occupational therapy practitioners need to understand how to communicate, document, and plan within transitional contexts for the best possible client outcomes.

The Craft of the Stage Manager

Stage Manager: The Professional Experience–Refreshed takes the reader on a journey through all aspects of the craft of stage management in theatre, including the technological advancements that have come to the theatre and the stage manager’s job. Chapters are laid out to reflect the order in which stage managers experience and perform their work: what makes a good stage manager, seeking the job, building a resume, interviewing for the job, and getting the job (or not getting the job).

Included are chapters on the chain of command, working relationships, tools and supplies, creating charts, plots, plans and lists, the rehearsal period, creating the prompt book, calling cues, and the run of the show. These are just some of the many topics covered in this book. In addition, the author uses interviews with professionals in various stages of production, providing another view of how the stage manager is perceived and what is expected from the work of the stage managers.
