Four of our students Jessica Epps, Kathleen Henderson, Anabel Reid and Syrah Wellmann, participated in the Texas Farm Bureau Collegiate Discussion Meet on April 16 in Waco, Texas.  Anabel was one of four students to make the finals.

Dr. Michael Nicademus, assistant professor of environmental science, accompanied the students to the meet and said, “The meet allows students to think about issues in agriculture and talk about them in a constructive way.”

Students gathered from all across the state from universities such as West Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. The first round began with 20 students and was eventually narrowed down to four finalists. The finalists receive prize money, and the winner advances to the national competition.

“I enjoyed meeting new people,” said Kathleen Henderson, sophomore environmental science major from Rockport, Texas. “I learned a lot through research and hearing the opinions of others.”

Some of this year’s topics of discussion included Renewable Energy Policies and the role of social media in agriculture.

“I learned that young farmers and ranchers truly are interested in improving the industry,” said Anabel Reid, sophomore environmental science major from Petersburg, Texas. “This meet will truly broaden your scope of what you think you know about agriculture as well as farmers and ranchers.”
