Eight charged over Star Wars film piracy
Thursday September 29, 2005

Eight Californians have been charged with involvement in the illegal release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

It is alleged the piracy began with a “screener” copy of the film at a post-production facility where one of the defendants worked and ended with the film being released online the day before its worldwide release.

Screeners are copies of films for reviewers or voters in industry awards. All eight are accused of copyright infringement charges that carry up to one year in prison. They are scheduled to appear in a federal court next month.
