There is a slowness that startles your typical daily bustle, when you step foot out of the United States. As Americans we are always on the move, priding ourselves on staying “busy” and juggling all the activities. I get it; I am a seasoned juggler. But suddenly things change when you are in Europe.

Hi, my name is Kenzie Bankes. I am a senior biochemistry major with a minor in Bible, Missions, and Ministry and a concentration in pre-dental. This summer I spent 7 weeks studying abroad in Leipzig, Germany with the Global Healthcare program! While abroad, I took two classes: 1) Global Healthcare and 2) Christianity in Culture.

There are many things that I did over the course of this semester, and I treasure those experiences–from sitting in the garden with my friends to viewing Parliament, to jumping in the Thames, there are many moments that I have collected as wonderful memories.
Around the World in Four Months
College is a time to become familiar with the world around you, to understand the perspective of others who are vastly different from yourself, and to learn more about your own identity, your purpose, and your goals. After spending the last four months on a pilgrimage abroad I can say with confidence that I have become both more self-aware and more culturally aware.

Small Moments of Independence – Leipzig Spring 22
Studying abroad in Germany has taught me so many important things. One of the most important lessons I have learned while being here is to slow down and enjoy the little moments in life. I have come to appreciate so many things about Germany’s culture and way of life, but the one that stands out to me the most is how they have learned to truly rest.
Tales of Transportation – Leipzig Spring 19
With a desire to see and learn things that are foreign, my classmates and I took off to the world in the form of European travel. From Leipzig to Berlin, Wittenburg, Weimar, Zwickau, Sächsische Schweiz, Denmark, England, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Czechia, Greece, Holland, Switzerland, and France, travel was the underlying proponent of each of these places. Trams, buses, trains, and planes were all too familiar by the end of our time abroad, but to learn them was a daunting and difficult task. My experience abroad can be very well metamorphized by my transition from a lack of understanding to a full comfort in using the transportation systems of Germany and across Europe.
I am so glad I studied abroad in China because it changed my view of Asian cultures and has even made me consider going back. I definitely recommend stretching yourself and going to a place you never imagined yourself being in because you’ll learn a lot about yourself and about the world.
A huge “THANK YOU!” to the Honor’s College for giving me a Travel Grant and lessening the financial burden of Study Abroad! This semester would not have been possible without you!
You cannot remain unchanged after a journey such as this. God is constantly shaping and refining us to be more Christ-like ambassadors for His kingdom. I am not the same person who left Dallas, and with God’s grace, I have a new appreciation and understanding for engaging His global mission.
