Tales From aBroad
The Perspective of Language – Spring 22
Language, although most fail to recognize it, has a profound influence on our lives. It shapes how we think, determines the tone with which we address coworkers, the way we react in a conversation, and can dictate societal norms.
Ramblings About the Rambla – Spring 22
Uruguay is home to many interesting things on a tourist’s checklist: mate tea, Italian architecture, intimate barbecues called asados, and endless hidden-gem coffee shops. However, it’s little known that right in the heart of the country lies the world’s longest continuous sidewalk. La rambla, which directly translates to “the promenade”, stretches 22.2 kilometers along the coast of Montevideo and is maintained by the city for free public access.
A Cultural Reset – Spring 22
Before departing for study abroad, I decided that I wanted to take every opportunity to educate myself on new cultures, foreign experiences, and engage in a different way of life. This was not an easy challenge, but as I reflect on the past few months, I see more than several instances in which my time here has changed or challenged perspectives I’ve had for years.
Learning to Grow – Fall 21
There are many beautiful and formative things one can experience while on study abroad. Perhaps the most obvious is to be able to do and see things I never did before. Being in Leipzig during the fall is certainly an experience that I will never forget. As a history...
Friendships and Christianity – Fall 21
While studying abroad in Oxford for the semester, I learned a lot about myself. The biggest thing I learned is that my Christianity might look different from the faith of those around me, and that’s okay.
Studying in Germany – Fall 21
Someone asked me recently why I chose to study abroad and why Germany, specifically. After thinking about it, I realized I did not have a good answer for them. I do not know why I chose to study abroad or why I chose Germany other than I had the opportunity and I jumped at the challenge. I knew it would stretch and grow me out of my comfort zone, and I was excited to experience new things.
Friendships Abroad – Fall 21
This August, I had the opportunity to study abroad for a full semester in Oxford, England. It is very difficult to describe in words what an astounding experience it has been, but nevertheless I will try. Before this trip I had been on study abroad with my family, so I had some idea of what it would be like. Even though I have had this past experience, actually getting to be there on my own as a student has been one of the most rewarding times in my life
Heimat – Leipzig Fall 21
Heimat. That means home in the German language. Leipzig has truly become home for me. Three months ago I came to Leipzig not knowing what to expect. I was nervous, intimidated by the language, and already missing the familiarity of Texas. But those feelings did not last long as my time abroad quickly began to transform me. I was transformed by stepping outside of my comfort zone in three ways; I became independent, open-minded, and I learned how to love those around me better.
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone – Leipzig Fall 21
In the fall of 2021, I embarked on the experience of a lifetime. My high school self would never imagine that I would turn twenty, get on a plane with fourteen other students, and spend an entire semester five thousand miles away from home. Yet here I am, in the end, reminiscing on all the incredible opportunities I never would have encountered had I told myself that Germany was just a little too far.
The Awakening – Oxford Fall 21
My heart was racing, my palms sweating, my tears swelling, and my breath panting. Those were my visceral reactions during take-off. The culmination of anxiety, restlessness, excitement, and relief flooded my senses during that take-off from the Dallas airport. I felt incredibly small thinking about how I have never needed a passport before, hardly been in an airplane before, and certainly never left the country before. I genuinely thought that my study abroad experience wouldn’t even make it off the runway– but there I was flying through the air watching as my comfortable little world grew smaller and smaller. There was no turning back — I was diving head-first into the unknown.
I am so glad I studied abroad in China because it changed my view of Asian cultures and has even made me consider going back. I definitely recommend stretching yourself and going to a place you never imagined yourself being in because you’ll learn a lot about yourself and about the world.
A huge “THANK YOU!” to the Honor’s College for giving me a Travel Grant and lessening the financial burden of Study Abroad! This semester would not have been possible without you!
You cannot remain unchanged after a journey such as this. God is constantly shaping and refining us to be more Christ-like ambassadors for His kingdom. I am not the same person who left Dallas, and with God’s grace, I have a new appreciation and understanding for engaging His global mission.
