Problem 2: Pass the Ammunition

Three friends were hunting in the taiga. Two of them, while fording a small stream, got their cartridge cases wet. The three friends divided what good cartridges remained, equally.

After each had fired 4 shots, the total cartridges remaining were equal to the number each had after the division.

How many cartridges were divided?
