Occupied, Officially

Abilene Christian University is officially authorized to occupy the Royce and Pam Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center – more than a week later than expected, but with enough time to keep Saturday’s dedication ceremony and the Sept. 2 grand opening on track.

Only one piece of major work is left to do: laying tile in the leisure pool, saved for the end because the surface must immediately be covered with water to avoid drying and cracking. Below the jump are photos that indicate just how close the facility is to completion.

First, the unfinished part: Crews have installed a large ACU logo in the leisure pool and yesterday were prepping the floor for tile installation.

Mini lockers in the wall of Scruggs Gymnasium were the last piece needing to be finished in that area of the facility.

As seen at the top of this post and the photo above, all work on the terrazzo floor in the lobby is finished, and installation of the reception desk is nearly complete. Crews yesterday installed the large sign bearing the words of Mark 12:30: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

Construction crews have finished with the cardio floor, allowing technicians to work on wiring and the installation of the exercise equipment delivered there last week.

Crews jackhammered out and replaced the floor around the bouldering wall with a rubberized, padded floor last week.

Elsewhere on the first floor, the locker rooms are complete.

On the second floor, little touches like adding these swooping frosted elements to the glass at the top of the stairs help lend a more finished look.

Other steps, such as removing the protective plastic wrapping from the second-floor windows help for the first time give a sense of the views available on the one side and the finished jogging track on the other. As can be seen out the window, landscaping outside the facility is still very much in progress.

Meanwhile, crews have installed the signage marking the main entrances to the facility, further proof that this years-long journey is about to end:
