A&E Alum Helping with Philippines Disaster Relief

by   |  11.20.13  |  Uncategorized

In November, Alex Wann, a 2010 graduate of ACU’s A&E Department, was called to help with disaster relief after super typhoon Yolando hit the Philippines. Wann has been working with Samaritan’s Purse in Bolivia with water quality.

Wann worked at the Samaritan’s Purse base in Tacloban City, which was hit very hard by the storm. His work included water, sanitation and hygiene, but focused on sanitation. Wann said “these kinds of interventions are critical in the aftermath of such a disaster to prevent the spread of disease.” Wann said the work would be intense and communication would be scarce, but he was excited to see what God would do through this situation. Happy Happy Happy Homecoming!

by   |  11.05.13  |  Uncategorized

The A&E Department brought home the gold in this year’s homecoming parade winning first place in the non-social club division. The overarching theme of this year’s homecoming festivities was the ACU Dynasty. From there the bright minds in our department came up with the idea to theme our float after one of the hottest (and hairiest) topics in pop culture today: Duck Dynasty. Kayla Hanning, a Freshman Animal Science major, is credited with coming up with this brilliant idea. Kayla said when she heard of the ACU Dynasty theme she thought “Who better to do Duck Dynasty than Ag?” Kayla watches the show almost every week and her favorite character is Mrs. Kay. More »

Every year for the past nine years, our department has taken a trip to the Medina Children’s Home to serve the Children’s Home and the kids that live there. The trip began when house parents from Medina invited us to come and do different service projects such as cleaning vacant cottages, working livestock, gathering pecans, painting, mowing and organizing food pantries and clothing donations. Exceptional. Innovative. Real. That is ACU’s motto and here in the A&E Department we are contributing to that way of thinking. Most people would see a cactus and avoid it because of the pain that it could potentially cause them, but not the Exceptional, Innovative and Real professors and students in our department. More »

Heather Isbell and Anna Watson at Bondi Beach.

Heather Isbell and Anna Watson at Bondi Beach.

Two members of our department, Heather Isbell, a junior Environmental Science major, and Anna Watson, a senior Animal Science major, went to Moree, New South Wales, Australia with World-Wide Witness this summer. Moree is in the northern part of New South Wales, which is in the southeastern part of Australia.
Heather and Anna aided local churches and helped serve the Aboriginal people in and around Moree. They played with and ministered to children in the park and in youth group and passed out fruit to kids on the street. On Wednesday mornings, the girls were able to participate in a Bible study in which they went through 1 Corinthians 10-16, and Wednesday evenings they attended a prayer meeting. They also had the opportunity to share their testimonies with the youth in the community and on Thursdays, they helped serve a warm meal to the local Aboriginal people.
On the trip they saw wildlife such as kangaroos, emus, koalas, wombats and lots of parrots. The experience Heather and Anna had is one they will never forget. They would both encourage you to check out World-Wide Witness and expand your horizons. What you learn here at ACU can be used to impact the lives of others all around the world. More »
