Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce interior design drawing practices and methods. Hands-on production will facilitate learning through a variety of viewpoints as the imagination is merged with reality. Students will explore design communication effectiveness as it applies to organization, documentation, accuracy, neatness and aesthetics. A variety of media will be applied on various surfaces to enable the production of visual presentations.

Format and Conduct

DSGN 248: Visual Presentation Graphics is a studio course. Class time will include lecture as well. The professor will interact one-on-one during a significant percentage of the course. In order to progress, each student must come to every class prepared with all necessary tools. The professor welcomes consultations outside of class hours. Weekend and evening access may be possible through arrangements with the professor.

Goal

At the conclusion of the course, students enrolled in DSGN 248 will be able to draw and render in scaled drawings from a variety of view points while having greater understanding of the characteristics, interrelatedness, colors, and finishes of various interior materials, furnishings, and finishes. Completed drawings will represent professional presentation standards appropriate for architectural and interiors marketing. Students will have a clearer understanding of their design ideas.

Objectives

The student will:

  • Build graphic manipulation skill through the use of graphic textures and patterns
  • Apply processes and methods of creating and drawing interior views, i.e. elevations, floor plans, one and two-point perspectives, isometric, and bird’s eye viewpoints (when possible).
  • Explore creativity in the presence of accuracy to facilitate the merging of imagination and reality
  • Develop and practice skills for rendering to represent actual surfaces and finishes as well as contrast shadow and shade necessary to portray form and lighting relationships.
  • Implement visual organizational techniques to prepare industry standard methods of visual communication
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a variety of media: pen and ink, felt tip and art markers, colored pencil, and graphite) on a variety of surfaces such as: drafting vellum, light tracing paper, matte board, colored art paper, illustration board and other papers.
  • Produce professional quality visual presentations using varied tools and equipment.

Expectations

  • Each project will require significant work outside of class. Outside work will be reduced when good time management is employed during class time.
  • You will be expected to come to class showing progress has been made between each class meeting.
  • Completion of all Class Assignments is required. All projects must be turned in on time.

I truly believe you will enjoy this class. This  class can be very stimulating as you experience dramatic growth in your skills. Come to class each time with all of the necessary tools and your textbook.

Assignments

Students will be given a recorded grade for each of the projects assigned. All assignments will include a desk critique (“desk crits”). Most of the assignments will include full class critiques at the conclusion. All assignments must be turned in to pass the course. Students are encouraged to discuss earned grades with the professor for further feedback.
