Five of our A&E students, Spencer Fox, Tiffany Lutz, Melinda Brown, Ashley Simon and Jessica Cosby, participated in the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists (SAAS) Convention in Corpus Christi, Texas February 5-8.  This association provides students the opportunity to share papers derived from their own research and to exchange knowledge with other young scientists.

A&E students made several research presentations during the conference.  Fox, senior environmental science major from Houston, presented on the topic of the two-year comparison of warm season legume production with and without drip irrigation in the summer in a semiarid region of west Texas.

“I learned more about how professionals share their work with each other,” Fox said.  “It was a great experience.  This is a great event that helps you learn how to sell yourself to employers and graduate schools in the future.”

Dr. Michael Nicodemus, assistant professor of environmental science, accompanied the students down to South Texas.

“This is a good experience for the students because they are doing science rather than just learning about science,” Nicodemus said.  “It is also an excellent opportunity for students to meet professionals in the field.  Some of our students have met their future academic advisors through this convention.”

Brown, sophomore environmental science major from San Antonio, Texas, presented a poster in the undergraduate section about carbon sequestration.

“I learned what it is like to present a scientific poster, such as how to answer everyone’s questions about my research,” Brown said.  “I would say it was a fun experience overall and presenting a poster is not as nerve racking as it may sound.”
