A&E Students Make it to Finals in an Entrepreneurial Competition

Congratulations to Derek Zimmerman, senior environmental science major from Round Rock, Texas, and John Stephens, senior environmental science major from Abilene.  These students entered ACU’s Springboard Ideas Challenge, a competition for entrepreneurs to enter and win money for their business ideas.  At the 2011 competition Zimmerman and Stephens made it to the finals and received honorable mention in the students division along with a cash prize.  More »

2011 Spring Awards Banquet

A&E’s annual Spring Awards Banquet took place Thursday, May 5 at University Church of Christ.  This was a time to recognize the 2011 graduates, congratulate those who have won special departmental awards and to welcome the incoming Alpha Epsilon Sigma, AES, officers for the upcoming school year. 

The department was honored to have Dr. Nancy Shankle, the Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, in attendance as well as the A&E faculty and staff.  More »

Ashley Simon Recognized as A&E’s ACU Scholar

Congratulations to Ashley Simon for being awarded the honor of ACU Scholar. Each year the ACU Faculty Senate honors no more than 50 of the top students at ACU who have been identified by their department for demonstrating academic scholarship.  These students must have achieved a GPA of at least 3.5 and have earned at least 90 hours by the end of the fall semester preceding the presentation of the honor. 

Simon has demonstrated great dedication to her work in the A&E department and we are proud that she represents who we are in such an excellent way, both academically as well as through her character. More »

Memorial Fund Established to Aid Gosch Family

The Jenny Gosch Memorial Fund has been set up to help benefit the family of two Pepperdine University alumni, one of which is the son of Abilene Christian University graduates, and friends of the A&E family, Carl (’72) and Gail (Brown ’72) Gosch of Blythe, Calif.

Jenny Gosch, 33, died March 27 of a brain aneurysm, leaving behind her husband, Tyson, and five small children, ages 3 months to 8 years old.  More »

2011 NACADA Conference

Mandy Scudder, administrative assistant to the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, attended the Region 7 National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) conference in Oklahoma City March 6-8. 

 NACADA promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of higher education to enhance the educational development of students.  The conference provides a forum for discussion, debate and the exchange of ideas pertaining to academic advising through numerous activities and publications.  More »

2011 Visiting Committee

The annual Visiting Committee meeting took place Thursday, February 17.  Those in attendance were Dr. Jeff Hattey, professor of soil science at Oklahoma State University; Dr. Tom Thompson, department head/professor in the Department of Plant Soil Science at Texas Tech University; Dr. Jennifer Grimes, Associate Veterinarian at Belton Veterinary Clinic and Dr. Joseph Bunting, Produce Category Manager at United Supermarkets. More on the Water Catchment Project

A new water catchment project has been completed at the Rhoden farm.  Compared to A&E’s past water catchment project, this tank is much bigger and will provide water for a much broader area.  While not for human consumption, this 16,000 gallon tank will be used to water several raised bed gardens in the surrounding area.

 “We can use the collected water instead of using city water in order to conserve,” said Dr. Nicodemus, assistant professor of environmental science.  “We will be able to use natural rain water rather than using treated water.” More »

To the Agricultural and Environmental Science Department,

Mandy Wilson and I (Erika Carley) are having a wonderful, brilliant experience in Oxford, England! We are studying abroad up until May 11, 2011 and we are already sad to think about leaving this culturally rich place. This has been an opportunity of a lifetime! As of now, we have traveled all around England, including London, and have just recently returned back from a trip to Scotland. The architecture is beautiful and elaborate, the scenery is mesmerizing and breathtaking, and the people are genuine and open. The history of old rings through every facet of life here. More »

Internship Program
