University Requirements

For a university community, scholarship is important. Abilene Christian University expects that each faculty member will provide evidence (i.e., product) of his or her professional competence through scholarship and/or other creative activities appropriate to the discipline. The number and type of products may vary by discipline. The applicant must justify the number and type of products in the promotion materials in reference to university and discipline-specific criteria. Applicants must also include reflection on personal scholarship. Examples include, but are not limited to, the following items:

      • Writing/obtaining grants
      • Papers presented at conferences
      • Pedagogical research
      • Workshops and presentations
      • Juried competitions
      • Exhibitions or performances
      • Peer reviewed articles
      • Publications
      • Scholarly and/or professional awards

Department Expansion Criteria

In addition to the criteria and examples provided in the “Guidelines and Procedures,” the department adds the  following.

A) Creative Exploration and Productivity

Evidence of this commitment may be demonstrated by the following:

    • documentation of creative productivity

B) Continued Artistic Growth and Quality

Evidence of this commitment may be demonstrated by the following:

    • success in obtaining gallery representation
    • representation in private, corporate, and museum collections
    • unsolicited reviews and/or articles published about the artist’s work
    • selection for private and/or public commissions
    • publication of original faculty work (illustrations, graphic design, architectural design, interior design, products, etc.)
    • designs and/or other creative works that go into production (may include print and interactive graphic design, planning, commissioning, construction, renovation, consultation or other application of faculty expertise)
    • awards and grants received in the faculty member’s area of expertise
    • recipient of competitive funding: internal scholarships, faculty renewal leaves, etc.
C) Peer Review, Artistic Promotion and Exposure

Evidence of this commitment is demonstrated by participation in:

    • solo shows
    • invitation group shows
    • competitive exhibitions
    • art museums
    • other public venues
    • invited expert consulting

Statement on Creative Work: According to the Department of Art + Design Expansion Criteria, “creative activities appropriate to the field of art” may serve as “evidence of professional competence.” It should further be noted that since our department houses a diverse group of faculty, not all of the creative activities listed in the expansion criteria are relevant to all disciplines.
