Chem 453 Biochemistry I
What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-Pre-reading. Slow, clear explanations. Podcasts!
-Reading before class was very helpful to learning the material because we were able to go over it twice.
-The reading assign ta were rather helpful. At times I would miss the assignment but reading before class was very helpful.
-Was fun and intereating
-The daily homework was very helpful
-Knew what she was talking about.
-She was excited about the subject.
-Gave us the powerpoints
-Answered our questions.
-Had us read before class
-I liked the new system where we read beforehand. She was ALWAYS available for questions, and explained things in such a way that made sense. I enjoyed the class.
-Your teaching method was great. I love the way that you structured the class- learning was much better than just lectures.
-I liked using responseware in class, it made me stay focused.

-I really liked her new method of teaching. It was very helpful to have the layout where we have reading questions and expand on the material in lecture.

-Good preparation and good lectures, as well as excellent blackboard material.
-Good powerpoints and answering questions. I like how the homework could be a way of answering questions! Good job explaining everything
-She asked us before class what we did not understand, so that she could answer our questions.
-I really liked the daily questions but I did not like how the quiz was done. We where not able to get a had copy of them and the results would only show the submitted answer and not all the choices. I also think that the notes she has previously used to outline important concepts should have been utilized more as well.

-Great professor, shows interest in students and is very helpful
-Acu needs more professors in this department who love science as much as she does.
-Great teacher really enjoyed the class
-I enjoyed this class! The layout of the class made it much easier to understand the material.
-The tests in this class seem unfair. They are too long to be aski g such specific information. This class needs more tests if such details are going to be tested, in my opinion.
-The tests were somewhat unfair. I was limited by my writing speed, not my knowlege of the material.
-I really liked the class
-though the reading assignment is great, if do more at one time that would be better
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-I can not think of any…
-Explain more in depth
-I wish we can have normal lectures in class

-Do a better job of explaining her reasoning behind taking off points on test.
-Explains the material more. Not just repeat what the book said and what the questions were.
-Not have the group discussions
-Better test review guides
-Get rid of the group activities. They didn’t add anything.
-Sometimes I thought you dumbed things down in class to make it sound easier, but expected more intellectual, erudite answers on exams. I think it would help to provide more complex answers to questions instead of trying to make things easier.

Chem 203 – Science for Elementary Teachers
What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-She was really excited about teaching the subject, and made all the afternoon labs really fun. She made chemistry and science seem fun.
-SHE WAS AWESOME! She showed many many good examples for all the new concepts we learned!!
-Very fun and involved actinides that apply to an elementary teacher
-I loved all the demonstrations and activities we got to do. They really helped me understand the topic.
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-She couldn’t be any better!!
-Cover the notes a little slower because of the fact that we do not have a book it is sometimes hard to keep up with her when she gets really excited about the science information.

Chem 203 – Science for Elementary Teachers
What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-She was very enthusiastic and passionate about this class. She used humor a lot of the time also that kept me engaged.
-It was a fun class and she did a good job of explaining the material.
-Always made sure that we did discussions among each other in class
-Always went through the notes visually.
-She put all the materials online so that we could access them all the time
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-Make sure that we know to print out the notes… Computers ate distracting and for chemistry you need to be able to draw and write
-Explain things more thoroughly.
-Not show frustration with students so easily. Set a tardy policy
-Sometimes she moved fast through confusing material. Slow down
-Teach all the way through, a few times she just stopped teaching something

-Dr. Sutherlin was great! I really enjoyed being in her class!
-You could really see that she was enthusiastic about the subject, which made the material interesting and really engaged all of us.
-Loved all the CSI and fingerprint labs! :)
-Set a tardy policy. Don’t put up with people walking in 15 minutes late everyday, it’s disrespectful and distracting.

What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-She was very passionate about the subject.
-She was always there to help. She honestly cared. She is hilarious
-Had time to come in and meet with instructor.
-Albeit annoying, the readings did somewhat help.
-Consistent reading assignments made me feel more prepared for the tests before intensive studying the week of
-Dr. Sutherlin is always very enthusiastic about Biochemistry, and she can almost always answer any questions students have.
-She was always prepared to class and I felt like coming to class was worth my time.
-The reading assignments and quizzes work very well
-She was very energetic and well knowledged regarding her material
-The readings before each class period prepared me for the lectures very well.
-Required reading, PowerPoint slides, answered questions from the homework in class
-Sought out what we didn’t understand and made it clearer.
-Dr S integrated YouTube videos and modern practical applications that made the subjects easier to understand and talked in plain English in class so we could under stand( by that I mean she didn’t speak above our knowledge level).
-Enthusiastic. Very helpful when I came to ask questions during office hours.
-I love her sense of humor. Academically I love all the helpful things she puts on BB. All the study guides and podcast tutorials are great! Ialso like the daily hw grade. It helps us stay on top of the material and makes grades a little less stressful.
-As annoying as the homework is, it is helpful.
-Having us read the text each night before class.
-She was available to students and posted some effective pod cast. If the class was thought like the pod cast I think I would have understood the material much easier
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-She is flawless
-Explain a little more basic first.
-Combining the grade of lecture and lab would be very convenient and relieve some personal stress.

-Sometimes I feel like we don’t cover everything that’s really important in class. But that makes sense, considering the material is based on questions we have while reading
-Eliminate group work.
-Grading scale info
-Somehow make the concepts sound more unified.
-Make the test shorter so answers can be explained more thoroughly.
-The instructor tended to frequently diminish the importance of the material while giving lecture in class. This tone carried and seemed to make the class less important. Online content was also frequently strewn with grammatical mistakes that made questions ambiguous and difficult to answer.
-Sometimes the order in which she goes over material is a bit scattered and can lead to confusion
-Hand out notes that are fill in the blank.
-Had lecture learning. I found myself having to teach myself alot that didn’t make class discussion due to the style of class. I didnt think that class responses durring class was efficient. Too much time was spent waiting for voting rather than teaching. This made test difficult since they were applied questions rather than knowledge of material and how mechanism worked.

-I love this prof. My favorite if all time. Hands Down.

-Everything sometimes seemed a little disjointed and hard to follow, but only sometimes. All in all, I enjoyed the class.
-I appreciate how much she cares about students not only as students but as individual people
-I think this class should be listed as an applied clues if test are going to be applied questions. Test need to have more time to take if test are as long as they were. Over the majority of the class was not capable to finish the test and so grades didn’t reflect knowledge of material or effort.
Chem 101 – Consumer Chemistry
What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-She knew material well and really helped students learn the material.
-She wrote out everything so the visual learners could see what she was saying.
-She used experiments and detailed information to teach us
-Her notes were easy to understand and she let everyone learn and take them at their own pace
-She was able to clearly communicate things to the students that was easy for us to understand.
-Always willing to answer questions
-Funny and enthusiastic
-She just really knew what she was talking about. We had nightly homework, but that helped me learn so well
-She did a really great job of covering everything we had questions on, made chemistry exciting, and was always open to discuss things further.
-She included many fun ways to make the learning more effective; group work, infomercials, taking quizzes the other students wrote.
-She was very enthusiastic while teaching which made the whole class interesting!!
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-Nothing she’s awesome!
-I can’t think of anything
-Not make us do the readings…those were pointless cuz we just talked about them in class the next day

Chem 454 Biochemistry II
What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-Asked interactive questions
-Prepared the notes in class which helps me follow along
-Always well prepared and knew the subject well.
-Readings work pretty well, as well as quizzes. Also, lectures are great
-PowerPoint
-Was able to answer any questions asked
-Walked through the material step by step to help the students understand the complicated processes.
-The reading/in class questions are awesome. For that matter, so is Dr. Sutherlin.

Chem 113 – Introduction to General Chemistry
What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-The youtube videos, because it was an online class, it was very helpful to watch her explain it.
-Online class so no instruction, but teacher was very good about answering questions
-Gave us podcasts
-Detailed videos. Responded to emails fairly quickly. Patient.
-The instructor posted Podcasts and Practice/Practice Key problems to help the students understand the lessons better.
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-Explain more in-depth some of the more complicated subjects. Because its hard to learn them from reading a book.

-The instructor could respond more in-depth to the questions the student ask, and be more available to the students, especially those not on campus.

What did the instructor do that made his/her teaching effective?
-The videos were good for learning visually.
What could the instructor do to improve his/her teaching effectiveness?
-Use more videos to explain the complicated items. Giving us just more reading material does not always help us understand what exactly is going on.

-She really explained things well and used different system of explaining by using videos and other cool things.
-She cared about the students and treated everyone fairly.
-She was a fair grader, unlike some small classes. She is awesome.
