Piece by piece, the Royce and Pam Money Student Recreation and Wellness Center is taking shape, inside and out.

Paint is on the walls in parts of the new facility, meaning that completion is not far behind in several key areas, including the Abilene Christian University Medical and Counseling Care Center. Read on for more updates and photos.

A hallway in the medical side of the Medical and Counseling Care Center shows how close that area is to completion.

  • Medical and Counseling Care Center
  • Near Teague Special Events Center

The first coat of paint is on the walls, and framing is in place for acoustic ceiling tiles. Likewise, lighting is mostly installed, and crews have begun putting in place wiring for an intercom communication system. Crews will begin installing the floor shortly.

Northeast corner

  • Locker rooms, showers, racquetball courts,
  • Near Eager Tennis Pavilion

The walls have also been painted here, with shower tile set to be installed. This section is also near completion.

Southwest corner

Crews used 300 gallons of white paint to cover the ceiling of the new gymnasium complex — with just one coat.

Crews just completed painting the ceiling of Scruggs Gymnasium and the new double gym. The white “fog paint” is designed to simultaneously brighten the formerly drab gym space while preventing the glare problems one might expect from a large white ceiling. Crews were expected to begin painting the Scruggs walls this week.

Overlooking the gyms, concrete for the running track has been poured, with the installation of drywall, ceiling tiles and hand rails next in line for the eighth-mile loop.

A view of the main entrance from the jogging trail shows newly installed bricks on the wall to the right, the newly completed wheelchair ramp to the cardio floor on the left and steel framing for the juice bar near the entrance in the rear of the photo.

Southeast corner

  • Main entrance
  • Near McGlothlin Campus Center and Chapel on the Hill

Bricks have been installed along the left wall of the lobby, while crews have erected steel framing for the juice bar and cardio floor to the right. The distinctive curving wheelchair ramp from the lobby to the recessed cardio floor also has been installed.

Though the skeleton is in place, this area will likely be the last to be completed.

East-central face

  • Pools, bouldering wall, offices
  • Faces ACU Drive and the Hunter Welcome Center

Crews poured concrete for the new leisure pool, filling and removing the wooden frame visible previously. Construction of the poll’s steps and deck is under way, after which crews will install the pumps for circulating water and lay down the basin’s tile surface. Work on the lap pool, meanwhile is on hold until tile can be replaced near the drains on the bottom, after which the current tile will be refurbished.

The elevator column in the rear of the lobby, between the lobby and the leisure pool, is in place. The column will provide the support around which the bouldering wall will be built.

On the second floor, crews have erected the steel framing for a large multipurpose classroom and the facility’s administrative offices, with drywall installation set to begin shortly.
