Project 5 Reflection

0 Commentsby   |  05.12.11  |  Reflection (P5)

I struggled a little regarding technical mistakes with the grid (if you would call that technical). There was just so much content that went on the site that it was sometimes hard to stick to it. I struggled at the beginning to come up with the aesthetic and feel that I wanted the website to have. Sketching is always a challenge for me, but I really need to do it more. I really think that with each project, I feel more comfortable and know more about how the website gets built. I pay attention more to the little tiny details that I would forget when we first started this class. I think I need to continue on my own just working on designing more websites and figuring out more about programming. I think it will be very beneficial to me for the future and it will also help me with my own website.

“While one out of every five adults and one out of every four children in the Big Country lives in poverty and has difficulty meeting basic nutritional needs, enormous quantities of surplus food are available from the food industry and food manufacturers. That is where the Food Bank comes in. Since 1983, the mission of the FBWCT has been “helping to fight hunger in the Big Country by providing food to non-profit organizations that feed the hungry.”

“The FUMC Food Pantry, connected to Abilene’s Call-For-Help network, operates every Wednesday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the church. Donations of food items such as canned soups, vegetables, and fruit are also needed.”

I then found THIS! It’s a schedule for all the different ones in Abilene!

User Scenarios

Jesse is a Senior at Rockfellow High School in Florida. He is deciding which college he wants to attend and decides to look up the different towns to see where he would fit in best. He first goes to the ACU website and finds out that they have a new ipad app that shows what to do in Abilene. He downloads the app and decides to take a look and see if they have some good camping grounds or lakes to windsurf. Jesse looks at the recreational activities area in Abilene and finds that there are several lakes that he can windsurf, a ton of bike trails, a state park, and other fun outdoor activities that he would be able to do. None of the other towns had anything that would tell him all of this information, so he decided that he really would like to come to Abilene because he knows what to expect.

Research Summary

Here are some of the questions that I asked a bunch of people when I interviewed them.

1. did you grow up in Abilene?

2. did you know anyone older when you came to acu?

3. If so, did they show you around and tell you where need hangout spots/activity spots were?

4. Do you have any relatives who live in Abilene?

5. When you first came to ACU, how long did it take you to find out some neat hangout spots? Activity spots?

6. Do you like camping or biking/being outdoors? If so, do you know of any good biking trails, camping sites, etc? How long did it take you to find it? How did you hear about it?

7. Did you have a hard time at first finding out where things in Abilene were?

8. Did you mainly just stay on campus your first year at ACU, or did you venture out and try to find new things?

9. How long did it take you to find some great “hold in the wall” Abilene restaurants? How did you find out where it was and if it was good?

Almost all of the people I interviewed did not grow up in Abilene, and a huge majority of the people said that they found out where good hang out spots in Abilene were by talking/knowing an upperclassman at ACU, or by asking someone where places were that lived in Abilene for a while. People are also very particular when it comes to eating at “hole in the wall restaurants.” Usually those types of restaurants are really run down and look somewhat “sketchy” so they didn’t want to go there unless they heard from someone they knew that it was good. As far as outdoors activities… they found out some places on their own like skate parks, etc. but as far as the out of the way, more “hidden” places, they again had to find out from upperclassman or older friends.

Reflection

This project was really fun, but also hard to do since it was so personal. I enjoyed the “blog” aspects of design compared to an actual site. It was hard at first, however, to remember all of the little things that go along with a blog theme that you have to design. As far as technical mistakes and weaknesses, I still feel pretty confident in my Photoshop skills. The first design always takes FOREVER getting it perfect and how I want it, but after that design is complete I can usually blow right through the other two page templates. As far as conceptual mistakes and weaknesses, I realized sometimes that I don’t think of some small things that might be a problem. For example, since I have been the one designing a site, everything makes complete since to me. However, then someone will suggest something to clarify what is going on on-screen. (like a rollover or highlighting what is being rolled over, etc.). I still struggle a little with sticking with the grid. I think I have improved on pushing the norm when it comes to rollovers. I feel like with each design, my sites become a little more interactive. I really enjoyed the freedom that this assignment brought. I also think that with each project, I become faster at designing because I can now see the similarities that all sites have regarding menu, navigation, etc. I still would like to learn more about what happens after the designing… for example, I am not sure if I am actually leaving out crucial parts of a design because I’m not exactly sure what to do after designing. I really look forward to the next project and continuing to grow in webdesign.
