2012 Block & Bridle

The 92nd National Block & Bridle Convention was hosted by Middle Tennessee State University on Jan. 31- Feb. 3, 2012. For the first time ever, the Convention was held in conjunction with the 2012 Cattle Industry Convention & NCBA Trade Show. Students Merissa Ford, Mandy Wilson and Anna Watson spent the week celebrating this year’s theme “Moovin’ to the Music.”

The Cattle Industry Convention was held in Nashville at the Gaylord Opryland Convention Center. There, the students attended lectures on such topics as the future of the cattle industry and strategies impacting feed efficiency. More »

Raised Beds

The brainstorming is finally becoming a reality on Rhoden farm as students and faculty are hard at work on the raised bed garden project. Teaching students about appropriate agriculture for a developing country is a primary motivation for development of the raised bed gardens where research, demonstration and lab experiences will occur.

The A&E department started discussing the raised bed project in the fall of 2009 and just started constructionlast year. Dr. Nicodemus, assistant professor of environmental science, brings his Plant Science students to work on the garden 5-6 times each semester. More »

More on the Water Catchment Project

A new water catchment project has been completed at the Rhoden farm.  Compared to A&E’s past water catchment project, this tank is much bigger and will provide water for a much broader area.  While not for human consumption, this 16,000 gallon tank will be used to water several raised bed gardens in the surrounding area.

 “We can use the collected water instead of using city water in order to conserve,” said Dr. Nicodemus, assistant professor of environmental science.  “We will be able to use natural rain water rather than using treated water.” More »

To the Agricultural and Environmental Science Department,

Mandy Wilson and I (Erika Carley) are having a wonderful, brilliant experience in Oxford, England! We are studying abroad up until May 11, 2011 and we are already sad to think about leaving this culturally rich place. This has been an opportunity of a lifetime! As of now, we have traveled all around England, including London, and have just recently returned back from a trip to Scotland. The architecture is beautiful and elaborate, the scenery is mesmerizing and breathtaking, and the people are genuine and open. The history of old rings through every facet of life here. More »

Block and Bridle

A group of A&E students and Dr. Ed Brokaw attended the National Block and Bridle Convention October 14-17 at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan.  National Block and Bridle Club members are college students from across the United States interested in animal agriculture.  The national convention is a time for all Collegiate Block and Bridle Clubs to gather annually to form closer relationship among students pursuing some phase of animal agriculture as a profession.
