Macular degeneration is age-related and caused by damage to the macula. The macula is the small spot in the center of the retina.
It can take a while to notice the symptoms of macular degeneration but as it progresses, a blurred area in the central line of vision appears. Over time, the blurred area will become larger and spots can develop in the central area of vision.
Macular degeneration causes problems with everyday tasks such as:
- Driving
- Reading
- Writing
- Watching television
- Cooking
- Fixing things around the home
Reducing the risk of macular degeneration include:
- Avoid smoking
- Exercise regularly
- Eat health foods
- Maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol
Currently, macular degeneration does not have a cure but incorporating healthy habits in your lifestyle can help vision last longer.
