This past weekend, the Pruett Gerontology Center hosted an Abilene Christian University team for this area’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s a yearly event that raises funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s care, research, and support.
The event included a 1-mile or 2-mile walk, sponsor booths, and fun activities for kids. During the ceremony before the walk, the speakers cheered the benefits a new FDA approved drug have had for a local man.
While we walked together, we chatted about our loved ones who we were honoring! Several of us were walking in honor of our grandmothers and mothers, emphasizing that women are at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s than men. We also just enjoyed getting to know each other and the beautiful weather. Several of us made it the full 2 miles!
We were also walking in recognition of the many caregivers currently at ACU. Many faculty, staff, and even students are currently caring for loved ones dealing with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
Our small team set a high fundraising goal, and we were able to raise almost $1,000 towards the goal to provide funds that allow the Alzheimer’s Association to provide 24/7 care and support while accelerating critical research.
We are already looking forward to next year’s event!
