Jonathan Holmes, 2012 graduation receiving congratulations from Dean Donnie Snider
Jonathan Holmes graduated from ACU in 2012 with a major in Social Work. He is the son of David and Veronica Holmes of Los Angeles, California.
Recently, Jonathan wrote Dr. Charlie Pruett to give him an update of his continuing education and mission to work with senior adults.
Here’s the news from Jonathan:
“I finished my first quarter of graduate school at the University of Chicago and am enjoying it. I started my graduate internship last week at Feeding America, a national network of 200 food banks nationwide. I will be working with the programs team and tracking state legislation that deals with hunger. I expressed my interest in specifically working with Senior Hunger programs that food banks and Feeding America is trying to put together as I see a great need in addressing Senior Hunger (isn’t as looked at as Child Hunger is). Feeding America currently has a few programs and initiatives to work with communities to address Senior Hunger but I am planning to work with the Director here to help look at and hopefully even as an intern, be instrumental in finding different ways to address and work with Senior Hunger as it affects older adults.”
Jonathan attained the Gerontology certification because “I wanted to focus on and address a population not adequately addressed in society. I felt a need to work that population. Indeed, while at ACU, Jonathan was a Social Work intern at Sears Methodist Retirement Center. His advice for current Gerontology students reflects his outreach as a student, “Try to volunteer as much as you can. Connect with older people in different environments and build relationships and reach out. Spend some time in fellowship and get to know people.”
Dell Hoover, member at Hillcrest church of Christ recalls fond memories of Jonathan’s ministry work, “We love Jonathan. We miss him. He was a great help at our Sunday pm worship.”
