Photography Course Descriptions

ART291 Intro to Photography (3 credit hours)

In-depth introduction to the basic principles and history of black-and-white photography. Course includes the study of small-format cameras, film exposure, basic darkroom techniques, and the fundamental theory and practice of photography such as the meanings of various photographic terms, composition, and artistic expression throughout studio assignments.

ART292 Digital Art Photography (3 credit hours)

Explores digital photography and digital camera operations, covering lighting, composition, exposure, and image editing.  Students will study and fundamentals of digital photographic concepts as well as experimental processes.  Basic computer skills are required.

ARTxx1 Advanced Photography I: Commercial Practices (3 credit hours)

A course designed for the exploration of current professional photographic techniques and trends. Emphasis in studio and field assignments related to problems encountered in commercial photography. Topics include, but are not limited to: studio product, portraiture, editorial, fashion, and architectural photography using digital cameras (DSLR, preferably 10 megapixel or more), strobe and tungsten lighting, and business practices for professional photographers. Portfolio development and verbal presentations will be emphasized.

ARTxx2 Advanced Photography II: Moving Picture (3 credit hours)

The course offers an opportunity to learn advanced techniques of digital filmmaking for a variety of applications ranging from short narrative works to art videos, and documentaries. We will discuss the processes and techniques for storyboarding, lighting, editing, and cinematography, and we will give emphasis to conceptual development and discuss how these techniques can be employed for desired effects. The students will produce short narratives and video works.
