In honor of Al Haley’s 23 years as ACU’s writer in residence “The Last Lecture” will be held on Dead Day, Monday Dec. 6. This special event is occasioned by Al’s retirement at the end of this semester. Al’s lecture will begin promptly at noon; however, please consider arriving a few minutes early to hear entertainment by a live Music Department jazz quintet who will have the place swinging and set the mood for what will be a fun and uplifting time! The event will be held in Room 272 (Core Classroom) outside the Brown Library.

Join us Nov. 30 from 7-8:30pm in the ACU Library Reading Commons for a live debate entitled “Resolved: The Texas Heartbeat Act advances justice and the common good.” The debate is presented by the ACU Political Science and Criminal Justice Department in partnership with the ACU Library and features students from the department’s Research Methods class. Dr. Benjamin Peterson will be the moderator.  All are welcome.  More details are on our blog.

Join Chad Gundersen and Chris Juen, producers of The Chosen television series, for a Q&A sponsored by JMC in the Packer Forum of the Brown Library about the making of the groundbreaking show. The event will be 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the Packer Forum of the Brown Library.

Professor Joyce Haley will transition from teaching responsibilities to duties in the Adam’s Center for Teaching and Excellence, and the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication invites faculty and staff to a reception from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Morris+Mitchell office on the first floor of the Don H. Morris Building.

A belated retirement reception for Dr. Patricia Hernandez will be held from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM in the Lobby of Halbert-Walling Research Center on Friday, December 3, 2021. The department would like to invite you to drop by and greet Patricia and enjoy Mexican Hot Chocolate and Tamales. Patricia has moved to Austin to be of help to her parents and will be with us in Abilene for the reception.

Join the ACU community next Sunday, Nov. 7, on the lawn of the Onstead-Packer Biblical Studies Building to kick off Christmas Around the World, a celebration of holiday traditions from around the globe, with a free concert by country music artist Aaron Watson (’00). Vendors open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 7:45 p.m. Bring your favorite blanket or lawn chair and enjoy our annual Christmas tree lighting, food trucks, and night of great music. CSART presents the 35th annual Carmichael-Walling Lectures on Thursday, November 4. Dr. Nijay Gupta of Northern Seminary will speak on the theme: Strange Religion—How the First Christians Were Weird, Dangerous and Attractive.  Lecture 1 (4pm). People of Faith: Why the First Christians Called Themselves “Believers.” Lecture 2 (7pm). Cult Without Smoke and Blood: The Strange Worship of the Early Christians. Lectures are free, open to the public and will take place in Hart Auditorium in the Onstead-Packer Biblical Studies Building on ACU’s campus in Abilene. After 15 years with ACU, Lisa Murphy has decided to retire.  While we will miss her cheerful spirit and wealth of university knowledge, we are very happy for her to start her next chapter.  Please join us for a reception on Thursday, October 28th from 1:30-3pm in the Provost’s Office.
