Dr. Charlie Pruett, Director of the Pruett Geronotolgy Center, announces the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature Town Hall Meeting next Tuesday, February 4, 2014 from 10:00am – 2:00pm at ACU’s Hunter Welcome Center.

The purpose of the Town Hall Forum is to provide local citizens the opportunity to identify aging issues, concerns and suggested solutions for consideration by TSHL members in developing Resolutions for the 15th TSHL Legislative Session, April 27-May 2, 2014. TSHL is required to prepare a written report to the Governor & other state officials, Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services and the 84th Texas Legislature convening January 2015.

With a starter grant from the United Ways of Texas, the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature (TSHL) piloted a town hall forum in 2007 in Houston and continued statewide with an AT&T grant. Since that time, TSHL has conducted more than 20 statewide forums, attended by senior citizens, advocacy groups and the Texas Aging Network of providers and policy makers. Numerous aging issues were identified by these groups and TSHL members developed Resolutions for consideration by the Texas Legislature. From 2007-2013, the Texas Legislature adopted 88 laws on issues identified in the town hall meetings. The initiative continues with local sponsors and local TSHL Delegations.
