Instructions: Time to open your tool box! As you view the PBS video, “People Like Us,” use your sociological imagination to answer the questions below. This is a class activity for which you will receive a grade. The completed questions are to be brought with you to class, next week, March 4. We will use them in class discussion. After the discussion next week, you will submit them to Dr Pruett.

Introduction– While watching the “Introduction” what material symbols and non-material symbols are used to identify social class?

Vinegar Tour – Name a few status symbols in “Joe Queenan Balsamic Vinegar Tour” and give their cultural meaning.

Trouble with Tofu – Describe the class conflict in the section “The Trouble with Tofu.” In your opinion, what is the underlying issue causing the conflict?

Bourgeois Blues – Identify the conflict/issue in the segment “Bourgeois Blues.” What was the cultural meaning of being called “Bourgeois?”

Tammy’s Story – While watching “Tammy’s Story” :

What does it mean to be at the bottom of society?

Did Tammy have dreams for herself? If so What?

Name a few status symbols used by Tammy and her older son.

Summary Question: After watching the “People Like Us” video, in your opinion, what factors contribute to social class?
