The prevalence of lonely adult seniors is very high across the United States. Fortunately, we can volunteer our time in the community to help this problem. Here are some tips to help combat feelings of loneliness in the elderly population:

Volunteering

Volunteer at different organizations, such as senior centers and churches. This can lead to making friends, and volunteering helps you get out of the house and spend time around others. Over time, this will lead to friendships. The best way to help your feelings of loneliness is to serve others which helps take the focus away on yourself.

Hobbies

Find a hobby whether it is new or old, and find a group where you can work on projects together. You can pick up a hobby involving traveling, quilting, crocheting, sewing, reading, pen pals, etc. If a group does not already exist, start one and advertise it. All of these hobbies will keep you busy and have interactions throughout the week.

Go to Church

Church is a great place to meet people and socialize with others. It makes you get out of your home, you can join a study group that meets outside of church, and you can develop meaningful friendships as well.

Get a Pet

A pet helps you keep your mind occupied because they are entirely dependent on you. They love you and are there for you anytime. They are your friend for life, and they help you stay happy, as well as active.
