In the busy spring environment here at Abilene Christian University, it’s easy for students to become consumed by the whirlwind of academics and personal lives. Pruett Gerontology Center here on campus recently embarked on a heartwarming mission—a pop-up card making stand aimed at spreading encouragement to the elderly residents of Silver Spring Nursing Home.
Why Reach Out to the Elderly?
As we navigate our daily lives, it’s important to remember the often overlooked segment of our population—the elderly. Many elderly individuals find themselves in nursing homes, grappling with loneliness and isolation. By extending a hand of friendship and encouragement, we have the power to brighten their days and remind them that they are valued members of our community.
What Can the Elderly Gain From This?
For the elderly residents of Silver Spring Nursing Home, receiving these cards is more than just surprise—it’s a source of joy and emotional support. Each card serves as a reminder that they are not forgotten, that there are individuals who genuinely care about their well-being. Participating in activities like card making can have significant positive impacts on the mental and emotional health of the elderly.
From this activity done during our Careers in Aging Week, we are reminded of the power small acts of kindness and we encourage those around us to consider the impact you can make by reaching out to the elderly in your community.
