Personally I have experienced loved ones who have spent some time in nursing homes and retirement facilities. The main goal to look at for these residents is to provide a community that will build friendships through housing. These changes and living arrangements allow a safe space for seniors and their families to visit, especially when you meet their new friends. In my mind when I think of these facilities I see all the benefits to living there. However as a senior these benefits look degrading to some people, because of the lifestyle they once lived. This problem creates a lonely aspect of life that could lead to depression and anxiety. Some people find ways to cope as seniors, others struggle quite a bit.
Most senior living centers are like going to a new school in the middle of a year. What I mean by this is that when you move into a new facility everyone already has their own in-groups for communication among residents. This is difficult for a senior citizen because you may or may not like the new person. Whereas the person that is new has no idea if they will fit in which causes second thought. Social skills play a huge role in how audiences communicate with each other in a community. Some of these facilities have cognitive therapy or support groups that help these residents through their struggles of loneliness. It is hard for most seniors because most of these benefits come at a cost, which according to our presentation in class older women may be affected more because they statistically have less money than men after sixty-five years of age. These support groups help a ton of people but there are some citizens who don’t need anything but a little fun sometimes.
Some older adults love to enjoy a nice breakfast, lunch, or dinner with their family. Some love to go to sporting events to support fan bases or even a family member. Some adults love to travel and go on cruises. These kinds of adults are usually as old as the early seventies and can be younger or older. However there are some individuals who use addictions to feel young or feel good. The biggest one for elderly adults in our generation is gambling. We already know that statistically older adults have less money, so why gamble? Gambling is not only an addiction but it fills the lonely void in an older person. It also is fun which is why it is so hard for many to quit. According to Sagora Senior Living “Psychologists believe that seniors with gambling problems do so to avoid loneliness and other problems. Seniors who are not gambling can still find social interaction at casinos. Seniors often play slot machines with friends, and it helps them bond.” There are many options for older adults to fill or deplete the loneliness factor in their life. It is just up to them and their families on how they want to proceed in order to cure their loved ones’ loneliness, anxiety or Depression
