From photographer Abelardo Morell—same author of A Book of Books—a gallery of hauntingly beautiful pictures excerpted from his new book, Camera Obscura, where we discover how much of the world can fit through a pinhole.

I really enjoy the idea of the camera obscura and the function that it has. I don’t always understand how it works but it’s awesome and I got some pretty cool images out of the pinhole camera yesterday. This photographer perfects this concept though and his images are as perfect as a regular digital camera. My favorite picture is probably his glasses.

I think it’s interesting that Morell felt like looking at the world through a pinhole was easy. It’s almost like that was an obvious answer for a way to look at the world. I think most of the time we feel overwhelmed with how much there is of the world to see. For example, if we travel to a new place, we feel like there is just so much content that we want to look at, and it’s overwhelming. But Morell came up with a simple solution-a pinhole. I would never have thought that looking through a pinhole could bring equally beautiful images as the eye itself, and I appreciate Morell’s sobering idea.

I had no idea how cameras worked before learning about the camera obscura. The idea of it still boggles my mind, so to see these images by Morell still leaves me breathless. I love how the complex images of the outside world fill the entirety of the room, and do so from the tiniest of holes.
I particularly like the images where Morell portrays the camera obscura phenomenon through something different, such as a glass of wine.

I love this concept as a way of bringing the outside in. It’s almost like he is conjuring up a way to explore while laying in your room. It provides a unique way of connecting yourself to what is going on around you. I would have loved to have been able to do this when I was young.
