Public Lecture – Of Manes and Men: The Lions of Tsavo

by   |  01.27.16  |  Announcements, Events

Guest Lecturer: Dr. Bruce Patterson, Curator of Mammalogy for the Field Museum of Chicago
Thursday, February 4, 2016 7:00 p.m.
Hunter Welcome Center, Zone A

The Tsavo Man-Eaters were a pair of notorious man-eating Tsavo lions responsible for the deaths of a number of construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway from March through December 1898. This true story was the inspiration for the 1996 move “The Ghost and the Darkness,” starring Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer.

Since 1999, Dr. Bruce Patterson of the Field Museum of Chicago, has also studied lions in Tsavo to understand their distinctive appearance, evolution and ecology, and associated behaviors of lions. His group recently calculated the number of people eaten by the man-eaters from radio-isotope analyses of their remains, which reside at the Field Museum of Chicago.

This is a free event. Subject material and images may not be suitable for children under 13. For more information, please contact the ACU Biology Department at 325-674-2188.
