Board Member of Restoration Quarterly (2015–present)
Restoration Quarterly is a peer-reviewed journal published by ACU. In addition to serving on the board since the fall of 2015, I gave a talk at our annual meeting during Summit in 2016.
Steering Committee Member for Syriac Studies, SBL/AAR (2020–present)
I have served on the steering committee for the Syriac Studies sessions at the annual Society of Biblical Literature/American Academy of Religion meeting for two years (a three-year commitment). Despite the disruption of holding SBL/AAR fully online in November 2020, we organized two sessions; in November 2021, we had three sessions, and I served as the chair for one of them.
Member of the English Translation Review Committee, Antioch Bible Translation (2021–present)
The Antioch Bible translation aims to provide a Syriac-English Bible translation for English-speaking members of the Syriac Orthodox Church. The project has three phases: 1) translation of the Syriac Bible into English; 2) checking the accuracy of the English translation; 3) finessing the style of the English translation so that it is smooth and easy to understand. I am involved in the second part of the process: Jeff Childers and I are working together to check the translation of the Old Testament prophets. (I think this could fit under “service to the church” instead, even though it’s not service to my denomination, but I put it here since I was invited to participate in the project because of my academic specialization.)
MISCELLANEOUS
Here are some additional ways that I have served my guild:
- I was a judge for the Graduate Paper competition at the North American Syriac Symposium at Brown University in Providence, RI (June 2019).
- I chaired a session at the North American Syriac Symposium at Brown University in Providence, RI (June 2019).
- In 2018 I reviewed a journal article for Hugoye: Journal of Syriac Studies.
- In 2019 I reviewed a monograph on John of Damascus for Gorgias Press.
