Service to the community for me often means reaching out to/consulting with other professionals (SLPs and others) in Abilene and the surrounding areas to help those persons in their efforts to serve clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. I described that service in some detail on the page “Service to the Profession”.
I do engage in other types of community service. From 2010 – 2012 I served as a volunteer at Pregnancy Resources of Abilene, a non-profit organization that provides health care and resources for pregnant women and mothers of young children. I completed the training to become a pregnancy counselor, administering pregnancy tests and then educating women about and connecting them with needed healthcare and parenting resources. As part of my service there, I translated a number of their official forms into Spanish. As my schedule permits, I would like to again serve at PRA periodically as a pregnancy counselor.
