Abstract Guidelines

Not all submitted abstracts will be accepted. Acceptable submissions must:

      Abstract submission requires three steps:

      1. Complete your abstract before starting the portal submission. The Festival abstract submission portal is designed to promote inclusive interdisciplinary communication. Therefore, presenters should be prepared to organize abstracts according to a series of prompts in the submission portal

      • Follow URCI Festival guidelines (see below for detailed guidelines).
      • Be specific in your response to the prompts in each entry field.
      • Write in complete sentences. All presentations and abstracts should be in English.
      • Do not use jargon that someone outside of the field is not likely to understand.
      • Read what you have written to your mentor to check that it is clear and concise.
      • References are allowed within abstracts but not required.
      • Abstracts are usually a total of 200-300 words long.
      • Presenters will be given an opportunity to submit their abstract in discipline-specific format in addition to, but not in replacement of, the required format.

      2. Be sure to prepare all required presenter information before beginning submission.

      • Your name, institution, major, and email
      • Your mentor’s name, institution, department, and email
        • For Professional Mentor: List a professor or professional scholar who has supervised or at least is familiar with your work, who will advocate for you if contacted.  If you do not have anyone else, contact the faculty chair of the ACU department most closely associated with your presentation topic and request permission to list the department chair in place of a mentor.
      • Name, institution, major/department, and email for all co-authors
        • Up to 3 people can be entered as presenters for a given abstract. Additional collaborators can be listed but will not be considered for awards.
        • For Additional Authors/Contributors: List additional collaborators that have made contributions to the presentation if applicable. Otherwise, skip.
      • Electronic copy of your abstract text (to paste into the abstract fields)
      • URL for optional supplementary documents (if needed)
        • For visual arts presentations: Electronic files of example artworks are required.

      3. Submit using the Abstract Submission Portal

      • Use plain text format for your abstract; the submission form does not provide formatting and special characters (e.g., scientific symbols or italics).
      • Copy and paste the sections of your abstract into the text blocks.
      • There is space in the form to include a link to online documentation, such as formulas, images, music files, etc., including your abstract in its original form.

      Abstract Acceptance:

      • Abstract reviewers will evaluate submissions based on the criteria linked below and will assess overall merit within the context of the specific academic discipline.
      • Should your abstract be accepted, you will need to register for the Festival. Registration is scheduled to open shortly after notifications are sent.
