Every year for the past nine years, our department has taken a trip to the Medina Children’s Home to serve the Children’s Home and the kids that live there. The trip began when house parents from Medina invited us to come and do different service projects such as cleaning vacant cottages, working livestock, gathering pecans, painting, mowing and organizing food pantries and clothing donations. For the first time, A&E students and faculty attended The Texas Chapter of the Wildlife Society Annual Meeting on February 20-23 in Houston, Texas.
Students took part in a plant identification competition and the Quiz Bowl. More »
The Ag Missions Luncheon was held this year on Sept. 19 during ACU Summit. Dr. Nicodemus, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science, talked about current mission-oriented A&E projects such as the raised bed gardens, Navajo Reservation work with Healing Hands International and the Medina Children’s Home trip. The brainstorming is finally becoming a reality on Rhoden farm as students and faculty are hard at work on the raised bed garden project. Teaching students about appropriate agriculture for a developing country is a primary motivation for development of the raised bed gardens where research, demonstration and lab experiences will occur.
The A&E department started discussing the raised bed project in the fall of 2009 and just started constructionlast year. Dr. Nicodemus, assistant professor of environmental science, brings his Plant Science students to work on the garden 5-6 times each semester. More »
Five of our A&E students, Spencer Fox, Tiffany Lutz, Melinda Brown, Ashley Simon and Jessica Cosby, participated in the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists (SAAS) Convention in Corpus Christi, Texas February 5-8. This association provides students the opportunity to share papers derived from their own research and to exchange knowledge with other young scientists.
A&E students made several research presentations during the conference. Fox, senior environmental science major from Houston, presented on the topic of the two-year comparison of warm season legume production with and without drip irrigation in the summer in a semiarid region of west Texas. More »
